I was reading discussions in “Link building threads” and wondering if it’s even worth to build those backlinks. Some say it is a must, some say it’s worthless.

I, fore example, submitted about 20 articles total to EzineArticles, HubPages, GoPages, etc. but only few of those backlinks show up in my Google’s webmaster tools.

In few weeks since I launched my new dating site I received about 3000 visits total. It was enough that few blogs and newsletter site’s featured my new website to get to a decent start.

So do I really need to waist my time on link building?

Well choose not to if you wish and let me know how that goes for you.. Either you need to build links or have such compelling information that you just gain a ton of them naturally..

If your site is good enough that people link to it naturally, that is the best link building there is...

Well, link building helps to get you ranked in the search engines for certain keywords, which then drives traffic to your site. Whether that is a waste of time will depend on your strategy for choosing the right keywords, especially in the dating niche where competition is fierce.

If you can drive a good amount of targetted traffic to your site without relying on search engines, then perhaps you should focus on that for a while.

Do not waste your time if

    1. You are a celebrity
    2. You represent a well known MNC
    3. You do it for non profit

In all other cases, you need to spend time or money

You can try social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, add fans as many as possible, and talk something relevant to your product.

Exactly, if your site/content is worth sharing then you don't need to build links, but usually that's not the case

In today's Internet (WWW) with more than 500 million websites how can anyone become aware that your website exist without link development? Even if you were producing valueable, useful content to the marketplace, you will still need a link building strategy. I remember in the middle 1990s when it was easy for people to stumble across your website because the Internet was new. Now the Internet is maturing and cyberspace is becoming increasingly competitive. In my opinion, link building is a must!

Agree. There is a need to combine both relevant link (like from relevant article submitted to article directories) and irrelevant link for the sake of getting many backlinks to the site. A link is a link, be it relevant, irrelevant, follow, no follow.

Backlinks are still the current SEO currency. They are like votes that tell Google that your site is worth ranking for the anchor text of the link, SY

I wouldn't call link building as "wasting time" because you are actually building trust and authority to your site.

This is an investment to increase your website value.

If you can manage to get 3k visitors, how many of those visitors are converting or giving you profit?

Of course, we can't see much on new sites but it really matters to draw targeted traffic.

Try to check your bounce rate, time spent on your site, page views per visitor, adverts earning, affiliate sales, etc.

Also, check your current ranking in search results for your targeted keywords and the only best way to improve the ranking is by building links.

So, I would say you need to build back links in order to increase your website value (traffic, money, etc).

Content is king. Increasing content is much more traffic-effective than link building. Quality content=natural links

That's only true to some niches not all. Link building is a must not a "waste of time" anyone that says its a waste of time either gets their traffic from social media marketing, paid traffic, or just don't understand SEO altogether.

Kush86 ...thank you.... i would not be able to explain it better.
It is very difficult searching and adding good quality links and than keeping track of them. However you can not avoid it and in most of the cases you will be doing it for long time until you can afford to outsource ppl to do the dirty work for you.
To all of link building ppl .... "let the force be with you!"

The Web is all about linking. It wouldn't be the Web otherwise. I suppose you could have a "web" consisting of a collection of standalone content pages, but what a lifeless place that would be. So given that links are essential to the nature of the Web, it should go without saying that link building is crucial, and not at all a waste of time. Of course, there are better and worse ways to go about it.

It all depends on what you are offering. If you are offering something very special and unique, you might get lucky without the hassle of link building. I have seen sites and those guys didnt do any link building, the website is just plan html and some php, nothing special at all but they have a pr3, why? cuz they offer something unique..
but otherwise in general link builiding is worth it..

You neeed link building because even if you build links naturally, it doesn't hurt to build some links yourself so you drive in even more trafffic

Sometimes yes, you have to spend a lot of time, or money, on link building. Especially in niches that don't attract a lot of natural links. I mean, who will link to a site about 'Cheap Mens Combs'? ;-) SY
