I am curious if anyone here runs their own article directory and earns
any decent income running your directory...I think I have a decent
domain for a directory (GotArticles.com) but I am not sure as I know
it takes time to get any type of site going and with traffic...

Do you guys think the article directory is worth persuing? As it
would no doubt take time, and cost money to get what i need.

    Thanks for your help

I used to own an article directory a few years ago but but it never generated any revenue. Got a few dollars from adsense but all in all it costed me much more than i ever made. Good domain name, by the way.

I guess since I already have a domain. I guess I can tinker around with
it for a bit and see what happens...

I can already see this will not get started off on the right foot...the first
person submitted 10 articles where are already all over the net, and the
articles were stuffed with keyword spam...

I guess if I start a directory, then I can not be picky upfront...I guess
the best thing to do is take what I can get until I get traffic, then
start being picky on articles submitted.

I was wondering exactly the same thing. Nevertheless I think a good article directory might be an interesting website.

There are thousands of article directories in these days. Authors submit the same articles to all of them so they create a lot of duplicate content. If you want succeed you need to give them some reason why they should to write unique articles for your article directory.

    A couple of things...

    1) This is a great domain name, but it will also work for a site where someone is selling article writing services!!! Just for your info! I like it a lot!

    2) A friend of mine is making serious money with his article directories. However, they are all NICHE directories, and he insists on UNIQUE articles. He won't accept crap, and he won't accept articles that are already published elsewhere.

So where does he get them? He has some of them written for him specifically (I'm sending him some too since his directory gets thousands of visitors).

So yes, it can work, but it works better if it's a niche directory.

Offering article writing service would sound cool...problem is, I do not
write articles myself, would surely have to outsource article writing,
then deal with all the no shows, and other crap that comes with it.

I do not think any new directory can afford to turn down any articles,
even if they are duplicates and spam articles, at least until the directory
is bringing its own traffic in, then at that time I can start demanding
more quality from submitters, because I can not demand this if I
am not getting any traffic, or from people that submit junk...I will
be getting junk traffic before quality traffic starts coming in....

have not decided on what type of directory...maybe a general directory,
since GotArticles.com is not a niche domain, now if I had a domain
like GolfArticles.com then that would be a great niche domain...but
GotArticles.com sounds like it should be a general directory.

This is surely going to be a growing process...I do not think this is
going to be an overnight thing since there are so many directories
already out on the market, and I have to work my way in just
like any other new directory would...

I think SEOwriterplus sums it up nicely.

Just setting up a generic article directory using an off the shelf script is not going to add any benefit to anyone.

You need to offer something different, something of value.

Think about what any potential readers may want and what article submitters want.

A niche directory is a start, what about only having articles that answer questions like yahoo answers but in a directory format.

I run a relatively new article site, but I have yet to see any income - I do believe it will come in time because of a few reasons mainly that I always review and carefully consider all the content that is submitted, and also because I have engineered the site from the ground up, no off the shelf scripts. I also have some features in plans that I think are quite unique... such as giving authors rankings and rewarding them with better positioning on the site for high quality content. As I can adjust the function of the site as I see fit - I can easily tweak things as well for example I have added code recently that automatically weeds out the junk articles to cut down the amount of article review time needed.
