Before I start, thank you help. I am about to set up a new wordpress.org blog and I have a few questions before I sign up. I just want to make sure I set up the blog properly.

    1. What is the best hosting service to use?
    2. If I already have a website can I add wordpress to my current hosting or is setting up a wordpress blog like setting up a brand new website? (new site I get, new blog ???)
    3. How to I get those RSS feeds?
    4. How do rss feeds work?
    5. What are add-ons?
    6. How do I get an "add to technorati favorite" link?
    7. Can I transfer my old blog to my new blog?
    8. Are there any prefered layouts?
    Advice is very welcome... :D

Thanks again any help is also welcome.

    Cheers...

    - What is the best hosting service to use?
Any one you are comfortable with, as long as you have access to PHP & MySQP, CHMOD permissions, you should be ok. This answer may be vague, but there are so many to chose from.

    - If I already have a website can I add wordpress to my current hosting or is setting up a wordpress blog like setting up a brand new website? (new site I get, new blog ???

You can set up to current website within another directory (i.e. /blog) or in a new sub-domain (i.e. blog.yourdomain.com)

    What are add-ons?
    - Search for 'Wordpress plugins' - http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins

Can I transfer my old blog to my new blog?
    - Yes, need to export existing database

    Are there any prefered layouts?
    - this one is choice again and whatever you feel comfortable with. A great resource is http://themes.wordpress.net/ for themes and layouts.

    Hope this helps a bit

The other suggestion I'd make is to use a host which has fantastico - them makes it very simple to keep the blog to the latest release.

If you get really stuck PM me. I'll setup your blog and throw in a couple of my favourite plugins (to help with SEO).

All I will ask in return is a couple of sitewide links

    Regards
    Brian

    Hi Tabs,

I would like to take a minute to answer your questions.

    1. I can't answer this question since I run a hosting company but one thing I Can tell you is to go with a host that has fantastico. Fantastico is a module for your control panel where you can install over 55 scripts with just a few mouse clicks.. including wordpress. You can take a look at our video demo where I show you how easy it is to install wordpress using fantastico here

    2. You should be able to add a blog to your current website as long as your host allows it. Should not be a problem.

    3. Not sure what you mean by this question but if you are asking how to get RSS feeds from other websites so that you can use it for your blog, there is a wordpress plugin you can use to accomplish this. We can help you with this.

    4. For a detailed explanation on how RSS works, I suggest you take a look at the wikipedia article located here. If you are asking how wordpress handles RSS feeds, wordpress updates its feed automatically whenever you make or change posts.

    5. By add-ons, I think you mean plug-ins. Plug-ins are 3rd party addons for wordpress that people create to make your blogging easier. There are plug-ins for all sorts of things including the "add to technorati" plugin that you are asking about.

    6. There is a wordpress plugin that can handle this.

    7. What CMS did your old blog run on? There are a few migration tools out there that can transfer non-wordpress blogs to wordpress but if you wrote them all manually in html, I don't believe this can be accomplished without having to paste them one by one to your wordpress blog.

    8. There are literally hundreds of free wordpress layouts out there and I have used quite a few myself. If you are thinking of putting adsense on it, I can suggest a few themes that I have used to maximize adsense returns.

If you have any more questions, feel free to post here.

    Cheers

The rss feed I am talking about are the ones that say "Subscribe" I assume they are asking the readers to do something. I don't even know what happens when one does subscribe but all good blogs have them.

That is what I meant by rss feeds. I wanted to know where to get those services from.

    Cheers

I can answer number three - Use feedburner to manage your RSS feeds. It gives you great stats plus performs promotions services.

Ah, I see. As everyone else said, you can access your RSS feeds via http://www.yourdomain.com/feed/ but I recommend using feedburner (feedburner.com) as it provides detailed stats among many things. Best of all, it's free!
