    ...in my opinion.

So let me ask you this, why do you run a directory site?

But you don’t state your reasons. Why you say this?

I personally do not think directories are useless. I have had great success with directory submission (that's why I started a directory). They may not give you lot of traffic but they definitely provide you with indirect traffic by improving your serps.

    Thanks,

Because nobody browses a directory to find what they're looking for anymore. Everyone just searches.

I am talking about general directories, not specialized directories like hotscript.com for example.

I get some search engine traffic on my directory and then people click on listings.
I also get visitors from links I build and listings I have in other directories.
Directory listings help search engines to classify web sites so you get an indirect value.

Whether it be general or niche, a directory IS a directory. And to call them useless is obsurd. I also find it funny how you've made your way into the directories section here just to make such a useless claim, and without anything to base it on. duh!

    Now, get off my internet!!!!

    k, thx.

Do you mind if I share your internet for a sec :D

I can see why someone might say that, it kind of goes against the google principle, these links arent genuine links, eventualy google will do somethink about directoy links.

Most directories are base on a handfull of designs, these designs all leave a similar trace, It wont be long until google can effectively boot the majority of artifical links made by DIRs

Submitting your websites to directories may actually help your chances of being pick up by a search engine or at least increase your backlinks.
So no, they are not useless.

In my view, directories have definately lost their usability - but potentially not their usefulness. Firstly because they have been over taken by search engines and hence they no longer recieve the desired traffic levels (specifically in terms of general directories) and secondly because this area of the internet is now totally saturated (there are new directories starting up every day).

Directories unfortunately only become useful when they achieve a PR ranking, are based on a niche specific topic or are part of a resource for a large site which has other components just has (for example) online webmaster tools, forums or blogs.

In short directories at the lower end of the market are starting to turn into link farms, something ourselves and the search engines dislike with a passion!

Niche directories are more valuable than general ones, but directories are not obsolete. Just ask dmoz, yahoo, goguides, etc.

I whole heartedly agree with you on that. Specialized > general without a doubt.
