I received an infraction

Was this some sort of mistake?

I received an infraction for posting a request for logo. I posted it in the web design forum.

I am new to the forums. Maybe a better way to go about it would be a simple pm "I moved this post over to the correct forum" as it did not belong in this forum.

Do all members get treated this way or just nooby members?

So far, my first impressions of the forum moderators is not good. Way to welcome new members! LOL

    Soup Nazi:NO SOUP FOR YOU!

All members who post threads in wrong category, duplicate threads and start threads regarding infraction receive infractions regardless of length of membership to DP.

    I see. WOW.

I've been a forum admin for nearly 8 years and probably given out a total of 5 infractions, for only egregious offenses. I've found that infractions turn members off and chase away good members. I move threads all day long and just figure that's my duty as a moderator.

Of course it's your forums. You can run it however you want. I feel like I'm walking on eggshells over here. I'll definitely post less, and wrap up my business in the contest I've posted and probably wont be back.

I respect your decision. I know how tough moderation can be. But that's just my .02 from a noobs perspective.

Hey dodgeboard, I used to feel extremely angry when I got infractions when I was a newbie at DP. And even I created threads such as yours, and became a punching bag of other experienced members. But you will gradually come to realize its important for a large forum like DP to have strict rules, even if you consider some of them unfair. The mods have a lot of work to do in such an environment and with infractions people are usually careful not to repeat the same mistakes again (and tht helps lessen the load on the mods)

The first thing I see when I sign in, is a bunch of infractions, that still don't end till Christmas time... Welcome to the party, everybody gets them no matter what status...

I get it...we give em out like candy over here. I wonder how many (potentially good) members don't get it and are chased off by this.

Dude you are making a big deal out of nothing, You act like somebody stole your cornbread or something, let it go chief...

You have your forum domain as your screen name and here trying to trash this one, that right there makes you wonder if you're only here to trash this one and promote your own forum...

I use the same screen name on 20 or so forums. I read the entire FAQ and didn't see anything about not using your domain name as a screen name. You'd think if I was trying to promote my forums, I'd be smart enough to put links in my siglines like you did.

I said I get it. I said I respect it. YOU let it go.

I didn't say it was against the rules to use a domain as screen name. I'm just saying its funny that you are making a big deal out of an infraction when probably half the population here has one... The only person that needs to let it go is you, I'm not here starting threads and complaining over infractions... Its not that serious....

    Manitou told him :p

On a more serious note you have to forgive mods . A lot of people receive infractions for nothing simply because they are in the way of the banhammer . Our mods are overstressed because there are days when it's raining spam .

Well to be honest out of 6 infractions i have recieved 6 were unintentional and 4 were tottally undeserving. I ask something in the BST sectionand i got an infraction saying that these things should be done in pms and i see many questions being asked in threads. It's just a part of forum. You can't help. Just pray you are lucky.

We get that infractions can be alarming. I remember getting a PM about a sig problem (another forum, before vB introduced infractions) years ago and getting rattled so I try to give helpful messages with infractions.

Some members are "taking the piss", clearly know the rules and ways to circumvent them and we can spot the difference. These members might get a more brusque response.

From a practical point of view, and taking the thread move example, infractions are much more efficient because
    * the message to the member includes all the links they need to see their post, our FAQ etc
    * we can control if the infraction includes points or is just a warning
    * mods can see the action we have taken and which threads they apply to
    * we don't have to update the notes so that the other mods aren't left in the dark.

We try to find the right balance but we're human so sometimes we get it wrong.

Sometimes lol. Out of the 36 points I have, 11 + 1 warning were reversed after I whined about it and MANY more were totally silly (like you know for saying "fuck god" or calling someone who attacked me a hypocrite..literally) and disputable but I didn't bother pressing it much as I was already on some hit lists. I just hope that mods here don't keep firearms in realife considering how trigger happy some of them are.

It would be interesting to see stats (quite how they'd pull them together, i don't know) on Reports and what action was taken. Some users generate a lot of heat and while they may feel they get "pinged" lots it won't be every time they are reported.

That won't be your last one
I have been banned for 6 months for duplicate account that nobody has been able to give me the name yet...
So you know, you might have an infraction soon because one mod doesn't like horses. Hope you don't have one in your avatar...
