What are natural looking anchor text?

I plan to submit articles to the top 5 article directories but don't want to use the same anchor text. I know in googles eyes having a variety of anchor text combinations help your websites backlinks look natural.

Lets say I use www.mywebsite.com, http://www.mywebsite.com, or mywebsite.com. Does google see these are different? Or how about if I want to rank high for "how to play guitar":

    learning to play guitar
    to play guitar online
    steve @ to play guitar

The above keeps my prime keyword I want to rank for "how to play guitar" but cuts off from the back/front or adds to keep at least 3/5 words in the original order.

Or does google like somthing where you mess the order up a lot while just using the word guitar for this example:

    teaching yourself guitar
    playing the guitar
    learning the guitar

Or does google just care that you are not just using "how to play guitar" 1000's of times? Thanks.

I think it depend on your purpose if you want to good on SERP put the same anchor. it would be good if you have same anchor for hundreed or thousands same text.
However, if you want to rank your PR better to find dofollow PR backlinks and put a "natural" anchor text if possible

Best thing is to incorporate all of them into your linking strategy. However, make sure that atleast 60% of your link profile is targeting the primary keyword you want to rank for.

in answer to your question - dont worry too much about anchor text. you should be looking to build all round authority and this achieved by:

    - links from as many different domains as possible
    - varied anchor text
    - links to both the homepage AND inside pages

along with article marketing i would write content for your site. write how-to guides, then publish segments of them in article directories and link back to the full source. this might even bring you good traffic.

check out the directory in my sig, always looking for good content (and i love music :)

Mmhmm. Watch out it's a jungle here. Everyone has something to sell and isn't afraid to get you to buy anyway they can.

Thinking about anchor text in terms of ratio isn't a bad idea, early on it does not matter so much, but once you build up some links you'd better make sure you don't have 4 variations to 1,000 links pointing to your site. You need variety. In the wild, you get the site URL, blank alt img links, and even a few "click here's." I'm not saying you have to employ any of those but you should make sure you do have a variety, even if it is:
    keyword
    buy keyword
    cheap keyword
    buy red keyword
    key word
    dub-dub-dub.sitename.com

And each page should have different anchor text. It wouldn't be a bad idea to go look at back link profiles for successful sites.

I really have to say that paid forums are much better when looking for anwers. Yete there are reputable members who give good advice.

you need to do a keyword research first to find the best keywords (search amounts vs. competition) for you and use them exactly as anchor texts

Wrong. If you use the keyword exactly as your anchor text over and over again, you'll be penalized by Google for being a spammer. Listen to what Brad Callen has said here, he knows what he's talking about.

Yes, you want to include your keywords in your anchor text. You just don't want to repeat the exact same anchor text too many times. It appears unnatural to Google, and you will be penalized as a result.

OK. And what if you have ONLY ONE keyword you want to target. And therefore would only ever use this as anchor text? Would we still risk being penalized? Unfair surely!

    Hi Linda,

If you take a look at Brad Callen's post above he explained it pretty clearly. I'm not saying "use different keywords" I'm saying "use different anchor text including the same keywords." So for example:

    clicker training dogs
click here for tips on clicker training dogs
learn more about clicker training dogs
    dog clicker training
    http://www.mydogclickertrainingsite.com

These are the sort of variations that make your anchor texts look natural.

And as for it being "unfair," well...as far as Google are concerned, they don't want you manipulating search results anyway. It's not their job to create an algorithm that allows you link-build your way to the top of the SERPs. It's their job to create and algorithm that will return the most genuine high quality results.

And besides, you should be targeting more than one keyword anyway (in the long run).
