First of all, if you are serious, and have a plan for your blog, my suggestion is to get a domain name and opt for WordPress. There are too many reasons to go for WordPress, beling SEO and plugins main ones from my perspective.

Promote your blog on forums by actively participating. But of course you should not forget to update your website with quality content as content is always the king; where it all starts. A an easy site structure, an appealing theme and on page optimization are just fundamentals.

If you have a budget, try SEO for long tail low competition keywords to start with. If you are going to do things by yourself try article submission, social bookmarkings etc.

Adword is good idea but that will not work if you don't have any product.

 

You need optimize and promote your web site in order to achieve good ranking in search engines for keywords that brings traffic.

 

Page based optimization plays only 20%-30% role of whole website.

 

You can use the following methods to get traffic :

1. Article Marketing
2. Article Distribution - Distribute your articles to as many articles sites as you can find. I recommend here using a submitter tool.
3. Video Marketing - If you don`t know how to create a video then search for an article to video converter on google. What this tool does is transforming your article into a video. If you have some money I recommend using articlevideorobot [dot] com for this purpose
4. Distribute your video to the popular video sites using tubemogul
5. Website directories -Submit your website to as many directories as you can
6. RSS distribution- Submit your rss feed to the top rss agregators
7. Build aditional websites on web 2.0 properties with a link back to your main site
9. Write press releases about your site (be sure to be informative not promo) and submit them for distribution using prlog[dot] org which is free.
10. Make a facebook fanpage about your site and invite all your friends to it. The great thing about fanpages is the fact that they are extremly viral and if you have good content you could get hundreds or even thousands of fans to your page in no time. Again if you have some money i would recomment a facebook advertising campaign.
11. Rinse and repeat. Try to make as many videos as you can, write as many articles as you can and so on.

If you follow this formula closely you will see good results. If you plain to use your site for more time to come I also recommend to register a new domain name and install wordpress on it.

 

I think you should first consider what the purpose of your website / blog is and what lengths you are prepared to get traffic. i.e. how much is it worth to you and is there a market for it etc.

You can either generate traffic naturally (not paid directly, takes time) from search engines or social media interaction, using articles, commenting, bookmarking, video marketing etc. as many other posters have described.

However, you can also generate traffic by paying for it using different types of advertising media.

If you are serious about building a business then I would seriously consider buying your own domain and learning to build a website as you are investing time and money generating back-links and traffic to a site that you do not own.

The trade off is that you can use your blogspot.com site to get links with page rank (PR) to your own site later on, once you've proved that what you are doing works.

Learning and doing it yourself takes time, paying for it gets you results faster but gives you higher upfront costs.

 

First in webmaster tool ( if configured on your blog), set your geographic location to America.

Submit your blog to american directories, forums, comment on american blogs, Post classified ads in American ad Directories.
