Hello, I just started a new job at a Web design and SEO company as a Web Designer. Today in lunch we was arguing about taking keyword on site that rank high in a search engine. Does it matter? Is it ok to do that? I personally don’t do that, and the most of the SEO expert that I work with don’t do it ether. I just want to hear you guys thought about it?

I don't personally like to spy on the competition's keyword. But I guess that if one is someone stuck in looking for keywords it can help.

It's always nice to know what your competition is trying to rank for in case you missed any relevant keywords. Otherwise you should have known what keywords that you want to rank for and be focused on them.

If I understand the question correctly, you're asking about spying on your competition to try to discover which keywords they are trying to get ranked for and then applying that information to your own site right?

Knowing your competition is just part of the game. After all, only one of you can rank #1 in the SERPs. I recommend SpyFu.com or SEOmoz's Term Extractor tool. Tools like these can allow you to "spy" on your competition and see what keywords they are targeting so you can copy and make sure that you're not missing out any keywords or phrases that you hadn't thought of yet.

This isn't something I'd feel bad about at all. Your competitors keywords are on their page for everyone to see so it's not like you are doing anything unethical by checking it out.

I am currently on a project of creating a complete list of competitors (now at a record 10,000 websites). Checking each of them for top keywords won't do good to my website and to my man hour too. I just select my own target keyword and compare search results with these competitors and try to gain the #1 spot.

According to me you should choose keywords that are obvious relevant to your website and less competitive and could generate more traffic to the website.

fresh content on the page with lower traffic keywords are the best way to rank in search engine for initial level.

You could always look at their page source ;-) Even if meta keywords are not anymore important, a lot of people still put their main keywords in, SY

Yep. That's just a natural part of a competitive market.
