Good post Forsight - too many people get hung up on perfecting all of their meta-tags and worrying about on-page optimization too much. Title tags, H1 tags, content, SEF URL's ... Then kill it with quality links at a steady rate. I typically recommend about 10% - 20% of the total links each month. So if your site has 500 back links currently you wouldn't want to do 500 more next month, it doesn't look natural. Be safe and do about 50-60 and then increase slowly each month, slow and steady wins the race!

Most importantly when link building, avoid link farms! You want links in articles or directories. Get bloggers to write articles and incorporate your links intelligently into them. Go after blogs that have been around for a while, have consistent article posts, no spam, and properly syndicated.

Be sure to link to internal pages or product specific pages as well as your homepage. Your homepage is not going to be 1st page relevant for all of your keywords so linking to internal pages is very important!

I don't think that link building would violate the term of service of any of them. Unless they specify it in their term of service. All the traffic send from link building are quite unique.

 

Good onpage work followed by effective off page work will help your site to be listed on top 10.
