The U.S. was able to aid Afghanistan by using Pakistan as an intermediary. As we know now, this led to terrible consequences. Unfortunately, at the time we had little contact with people like Ahmad Shah Massoud and no way to funnel aid to them in quantity. On the other hand, our Pakistani friends vouched for people like Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and helped us funnel large volumes of aid to his part of the resistance. So, the U.S. was able to help Afghanistan only because Pakistan facilitated the supply routes -- but this led to the aid going to less than desirable elements in Afghan society. Of course, the Pakistani government itself eventually lost patience with Hekmatyar and switched it's allegiance to the newly formed Taliban in 1994. Massoud was assassinated by the Taliban and Hekmatyar has miraculously survived attacks from both the Taliban and the United States. He's switched sides so many times it doesn't seem as if even he knows which side he's on. He currently appears to be allied with neither the government of Afghanistan nor the Taliban, but he is militarily strong enough to survive in that position.

The U.S. is currently using Pakistan as a supply route to support the government of Afghanistan. Until the U.S. weans itself off of this strategy, it cannot afford to upset the Pakistani's by pressuring them to stop their covert war in India's northern territories. In effect, the U.S. is saying "Kashmir is less important than Afghanistan."

In addition, Pakistani politics are a minefield. Any U.S. activities to promote peace in Kashmir could act to strengthen Islamist radicals in Pakistan -- effectively pushing Pakistan into civil war. Civil war in Pakistan is the last thing the U.S. wants -- and is something which the U.S. sees as a very serious possibility. With that in mind, the U.S. is very nervous about pushing the Pakistani's to stop their favorite national pastime of surreptitiously invading India.

India is a big country. Kashmir is it's problem. India cannot look to the U.S. for assistance. But does it really need to? India should be capable of maintaining sufficient defenses for it's citizens in the Kashmir -- although it is not currently doing so. This is a problem that must be solved not in Washington D.C., but in New Delhi.

yes Pakistan is a heaven of terrorists. that is a very good excuse instead of replying...

i would make it a story like this.

before taliban's Pakistan was a good and peaceful country. no no sorry before the atomic blasts. yes i remember. this start happening with atomic bombs which are still very hard to digest by people who dont like to see Pakistan in a powerful condition.

then us attacked Afghanistan and asked Pakistan to help in the war.

by helping USA Pakistan stamped on itself a terrorist heaven.. wow

what a good reward Pakistan received for helping the us in this war, which is not its own war but American war which James cameraon pictured in Avtar in a beautiful way.

i bet i dont need to quote toward pervaiz musharaf's book in which it he gave reference to what was said to him"

"We will throw Pakistan in the stone age, if are not given support in this war" .

what could be expected from US.
They like to do what is in their own favor, but they like to do it in a disguise of helping others.

i also understand what is "under the umbrella of cold war" and by the way under which umbrella Iraq was invaded.

i think it was not an umbrella but it was a heavy American truck which was thirsty of oil.

plus, This truck is so ruthless that it can exchange blood with oil too.

good....i appreciate it. everybody appreciate it. why not we knowingly close our eyes.

if atomic bombs made strong nation then i suppose north korea too is a strong nation and japan the poorest country in the world.

nations cannot be built on hatred, jealousy and myopic vision.

pakistan's history of terror haven doesn't start from 2000's it goes to way back in 90's, where ISI literally funded groups such as JuD, LeT, Hijbul etc.. I am not the one who is saying but your own nation officers admitted it, it includes your presidents and ex-presidents too. There is a saying one in India, it means one who digs a pit for other to fall, he falls in his own pit,

if pakistan never supported terrorism , the terror groups might have not found themselves easy to pave into the region, reports still indicate damn ISI is still supporting not just the kashmir militants but also the Al-Qaeda and threatening to arrest those who don't listen to them, I don't claim this - its the leaked reports did.

you can't just blush away with us - afghan as terror only,

what should I reply ? to support more terrorists ? If there were no terror organizations on the border and mess around I would have guaranteed kashmir to be more peaceful, until 1990, there were no security forces in the cities its only after the mess and terror break they were deployed. If no terrorists mess had occurred we might have witnessed a chance of soft border in kashmir - which was ruined thanks to the dirty brained professionals in intelligence and army dpt on the other end of the Indian border

atomic bombs don't matter if a nation is powerful or not, even the smallest nations can acquire atomic bomb, if they have friends such as china who r willing to go any extent to trouble their troublesome neighbor

if zimbabwe r any remote african nation gets atomic bomb will they get powerful ?

your politicians and armed forces r totally mis-guiding you with myths

you have not read my words. i am not talking about "lessons learnt by japan". rather japan is the frontrunner in the anti-nuclear cause, but still is one of the largest economies in the world. plain and simple nuclear bomb do not makes a strong country.

you are again flying on your imaginations. north korea is not liked cause of the dictatorship which rules the nation and not due to the fact it has nuclear weapons. same goes for burma, iran to name a few. isreal too has nuclear weapons, but it is not hated (except for in the islamic world). dont compare north korea with south koera or as a matter of fact india with pakistan. north korea cannot feed its population while south korea has excelled in every aspect. india is on verge of becoming a global superpower, while pakistan is on self-destruct mode.

Asif - You sound like you think you are boldly speaking unpopular truths. Sorry, but no. What you're doing is displaying a massive inability to differentiate between fiction and fact.
    • - Movies are fiction
    • - Hollywood seldom gets history right. Movies are "entertainment", not history.
    • - Yep, we used nukes to end WW2. No apology due. Saved lives on our side. That's how war works.
    • - Yep, we backed Afgans against the Soviets, but the Taliban was not our partner in that venture.
    • - Yep, it was in our interests to fight proxy wars VS the Soviets just as they felt it was in theirs to do so against us.
    • - Yes, I DID say "in our interest". Of course we act in our interest. Whose did you think we'd act in?
    • - The Soviet Union did not break up because of valiant Muslims, but because their economic system finally imploded.

Decide if you wanna talk history or movies, but mixing the two doesnt work. Also, getting "facts" from what appears to be a mixture of movies, blogs and internet forums without checking them is an egregious error. Instead of parroting half-truths, fictional characters, and history of which you have but a partial grasp... find a real history book.
