Hi Dp members, Bascially my main hobby is fishing, so I have decided to create a website on fishing, the No1 website which is ranked for the keyword 'fishing' is www[dot]fishing[dot]co[dot]uk, do you think I could beat this with good seo & backlinks?
16,000 Where do you get that? link:www.fishing.co.uk is showing 555 for me. You don't have to beat the #1 spot, you have to have information or a service that people that fish will like and enjoy.

google is not showing real amount of Back Links - it is first... use msn for that : http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=linkdomain:fishing.co.uk&first=601&FORM=PERE8 first position on google is not telling me which portal is the best... good design, good photos with description about fishes... forum, + many many others will make Your portal the best This is right... good position in SEs is important, but not everything... if people will like Your portal and will return then portal is worth a lot... Even if you dont get the exact keyword "fishing" you still have a chance with other keywords such as "freshwater fishing" or "fly fishing".... Good luck mate and have some fun!

Even if you can't beat them getting second or third will still give you plenty of traffic. Just getting on the front page for a term like that will give you a lot of traffic. Like others have already said, just have fun with the site since it's about your hobby. See what type of secondary keywords you can grab and if your contents good you just might find yourself one day ranking #1 with 16K backlinks.

I'm crap regarding SEO. So help me out here. So... to beat the top place of any ranked site, you need more backlinks than the site? If so, 160,000 backlinks to beat! How the heck would you manage that!?
You could go article crazy... post to 200 article directories that would only mean that you would need to write 800 articles... guess that would keep you out of the bar for a bit.. lol
Older sites have an advantage because google trusts older sites more. To overcome this advantage you have to have a better designed and SEO'ed site and more backlinks of a higher quality.
i don't think you can easily beat that. it's gonna be very hard. but you can atleast try to reach top ten result of the keyword "fishing". that is more possible to achieve than beating the top1
