Not true. Get for example one single link in DMOZ or Yahoo! Directory and you will see a significant boost to your website. Ultimately, links are links.

It is possible that Google may want to consider "filtering out" at a certain moment directory entries, but why bother? Directories have their use, also for users, and Google is not going to penalize that use, that would have been going against their whole story, which is enhancing user experience. True that directories are used also to create links, but you could argue the same thing about article sites, blog comments or forum posts... would they ban all these things altogether? I don't think so.

In any case, unless Google says it officially in the Google Webmaster Blog, I won't believe it. And do not listen to all those guys that tell you how Google works or what Google is going to do because they have "insider knowledge"... because they don't know crap. If there WAS a guy that knew in advance what Google was going to do (e.g., their algorithm changes), then by now he would he multimillionaire...

Not true, it depends on the quality of the directory. Link building is same concept, you need to make quality link, 1 high quality link is better than 1000 low quality link. And yes, people say directory is useless for link building because they are talking about low quality directory which you can found many of them nowaday. however, if you talk about Dmoz, then no one will tell you it is not important

BUT, 99.9% of directory links are the useless low quality links! I wish more of my competitors would come here and get their SEO advice from you guys! That way they would waste their times doing things that do not really help and I can spend my time on doing things that do help
