I read a comment about the idea a building a 2,000 mile fence (which I probably wouldn't be apposed of) and they estimated the cost at $10 billion. I am thinking that whatever the number it will end up higher and knowing that everything the government does the cost is higher than any business or home would pay. So, I did the math and we are talking over $900 per foot of fence! Anyone here build fences for a living or want to put together the American-Mexican fence building company? We could make a killing and build it 12 feet high! your thoughts - both politically and economically?
It won't get done. The bill was just politicking in an election year. It won't get the proper funding. Look for more action in 2008.
I don't know...I'm more of a supporter of workplace enforcement through allowing lawyers to sue, local governments to enforce, and federal government to facillate. That with a more full proof form of indentification or laws to prevent people from just staying in America without being welcomed/checked.
Economically, would be cheaper to hire crazed gunmen that will shoot for peanuts. You know, rednecks, hoods etc.. Give em a rifle and spread them across 1 over every 1/2 a mile. Oh! I almost forgot. They will have to have a constant supply of beer.
My thought? The fence idea is ridiculous. Useless. As long as economic conditions warrant the risk of illegal entry, it will be done - however one feels about it.
The fence probably is a bad idea. It's just a visible band-aid. You have to tackle the reason as to why people are crossing the border. There are two things that will likely end the problem--and at less cost. 1. Put some very serious penalties on the people who knowingly hire the illegals and enforce these laws. Throw a couple of serious offenders in jail for a few years and I'll bet you will see a significant decrease in the employment market for illegals. 2. Stop providing welfare benefits to people who are in the country illegally. I have never understood why someone who is in a country illegally is entitled to financial benefits as a reward for their illegal act. Cut off the supply of freebies and the financial benefits of illegal immigration and the problem goes away. I somehow doubt that we will see either of these issues change.
Ummm...that was a joke. Well, an attempt at one. Maybe I could learn how from you to tell nasty jokes?
I will assume, since you think Israel should be wiped off the face of the planet, that their fence is a bad idea, so ours would be too. Maybe the USA should be bombed on a daily basis since we deserve it? Going out on a limb here with that comment, but your sarcasm warrants it.
Israel has a smaller land area so it work out a little cheaper, but if the americans need help with there fence il be more than happy. I got all the equipment needed.............
Would it be less than $900 per foot? If so, you need to get a bid in with the gov't.... Actually, someone is probably quoting it based on some buddies quotes and gets a few dollars per foot kick back.
Generally speaking, it would be hard to protect all of our border. Many of the 9/11 people came in through Canada. Although at that point (once they got in) they used the very flawed indentification/immigration system. There's too many holes in the system and far too many areas in America do not recongnize the laws throughly.
If haliburton did this kind of work, they would even be cheaper than that, but they don't do this level of work. The haliburton thing is getting old, fine if you can prove anything about someone else being able to do the work or wanting to for that matter. Oh, and I know this has been issues with them overcharging or what not, they are a large corporation and I am sure there is some level of corruption with that kind of money going through them, but screaming haliburton is just childish. OK
That's actually only small portion of the fencing. The rest is just security fence, which really effective as well. Apparently militants spends roughly 30 days dig a tunnel under that. They can get passed it, but it takes a lot of time, effort, and danger (if you don't know what you're doing).
Our borders are too large. For it to have a shot, the border must be militarized to some degree. Then we can at least slow down the flow. But, none of this matters. We'll see an increase in the number of Congressional PAGE's brought to D.C. before we see a fence.
