Basketball as professional sport is not popular at all as far as I know.
While football is the #1 sport here in Europe, followed by tennis and then come basketball and hockey.

I think Basketball has made strides in the past decade or so but it has a long way to go to reach the heights that soccer has worldwide.

Just look at the influx of foreign players coming into the NBA in recent years.

not to mention the pwning of the USA squads in the past few Olympics/Championships

Soccer is probally the most uninterseting sport ever invented. What is the point of running around all day to maybe only score 1 point? Hockey comes in second, because at least it has skates to make it a little more challenging. Basketball has drama, excitement, and real athletism. No comparison.

I think you are probably right, but then again MANY sports are painful to watch on TV rather than seeing them in person.

for instance I almost never watch the NHL on tv but I think hockey in person at any level is quite entertaining.

I don't agree with you at all LennyP :)

What makes basketball more exciting than football?
How does basketball have more 'drama' than football?

I like watching any sport except for things like tennis and badminton and such, and I don't think football is more boring to watch than basketball...

Basketball has more drama because of the swings in momentum. Basketball has more drama because of the final minutes where every play counts. Soccer has no drama because there is no scoring. You can watch a bunch of guys run back and forth all day and have a 0-0 tie. The drama is the excitiement. Along with watching great athletes play a great sport. Tennis and badmitton are also better sports because of the points raised about basketball. I really can't think of anything as pointless as soccer.

You're one of the very few people who thinks like that I think.
A football match rarely ends in 0-0 and íf it does, it isn't an important match most of the time.
If you look at world cup games games for example, you rarely see boring games.
Another point is that there are lots of possibilities with football. A lot of combinations, tricks and shots are possible, making it good to watch, as not even one game looks like another one.
Basketball, however, is on a much smaller field limiting the players with their possibilities.
Also, you say basketball is exciting in the last minutes with every play counting; football has that too. If a team is behind, it will give everything it takes to make the equalizer and this is very exciting most of the time.

But I guess this is just a Europe - USA discussion, with most of the European people finding football more exciting and most of the USA people finding basketball more exciting :)

Its probably because they mostly have to watch US league football which is really poor quaility compared with European.
