how so? I've never seen anything to suggest that? I would choose one or the other and use a rewrite to direct all the other to it.

    It makes absolutely no difference.

If you do choose to use both though, make sure you use a 301 redirect in order to pass PR from one to the other.

I agree that for SE either one is fine. But redirect one to the other.

For the consumer or print media the www adds identification that the masses can undestand.

For hotlinking in forums and other places online www rules. As an example let me post this thread as a potential link with and without.

    forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=151939

    www.forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=151939

Note that I did not add the http:// The forum software did that on auto pilot.

See which one became an auto link and which one did not.

It doesn't matter for SEO, some prefer one over the other (shorter vs the common masses expectations). You can always 301 redirect one to the other.

I share the same opinion - either one will do. Although you can use one as a preference say in Google Webmaster Central, you still need to do a redirect to the other one :)

That's because you have more links, or a more authoritative link, pointing to the www version of your website rather than non-www, not because it's www.

put that in your .htaccess file and you won't have to choose....you can also set your preference in the Google Webmaster Tools control panel
