Help me understand how to reduce bandwidth

    Hello,

Recently my site: ps3hax . net has has a traffic increase, in return that badwidth usage has shot through the roof.

    My current hosting plans are:
    Here is a graph (weekly):

    Monthly:

Note that I just had to upgrade to 100mbit port, which is why the data may seem to be capped at a point

Now it seems to me that I have to upgrade to either 15 or 20mbit (not sure which one). 15mbit bandwidth costs +$100, 20mbit is +$200.

Now I want to lock in the bandwidth at 15mbit, but I was wondering maybe I can optimize the images on my site to help lower my bandwidth. I was wondering maybe if I hosted all my images on Photbucket Pro, which has no bandwidth restrictions, would it help the bandwidth usage load off my site? Its only $25 a year which is a great deal in my opinion.

I also have a downloads section on my site which takes a massive ammount of bandwidth, I was considering moving this somewhere else (not sure where), maybe it would also help offset server bandwidth issues.

Bandwidth from downloads per day over last few days:
    36444660 KB (Thats 36 gigs a day?!)
    29023915 KB
    31505058 KB
    35166968 KB
    28407900 KB

So what do you guys recommend I do, I am somewhat still confused by the bandwidth discussions and what not, but from my understanding optimzing/outsourcing my images or downloads (or both) would help tremendously.

    Where is your site hosted?
What is the content for 36gig/day???

Its hosted with HostDime - its just many different files downloaded a day - not one in particular.

One thing I dont understand is that: Bandwidth Limit: 10mbit - what does this mean, 1000gb/month?

Why not try finding sponsors who can mirror your downloads in return for traffic them downloads through a portal which redirects via their website? Or maybe offer sponsorship links in return for a small donation of say $25/month, only offer this to 5 websites, that's $125, which I am sure would fund towards expansion for a little while.

The mirroring I would think would be a better option, maybe provided by a Web Hosting company, who would appreciate someone being redirected to their website, and it is also something that you could promote to your customers making more money from affiliate linking etc.

There are other alternatives out there, you just have to be cheeky enough to ask for them....many web hosts want to promote their services in other ways, and from what I see by clicking on your link you have over 100,000 members? Those "repeat" and new members who convert quite well through some affiliate and mirroring service.....ask about on here maybe? Good luck anyhow.

    Thanks.

1000GB/month means if your traffic exceeds 1000 gigabyte they will cap the line/speed or whatever.

I could spend some gig if you want ;) PM me then.

I just contacted my host this is what they said:
I was thinking maybe I should go host my site images at Photobucket. They have a plan at $25 per YEAR for unlimited bandwidth and unlimited storage - sounds like a steal to me.

That way I can upgrade my bandwidth to 15mbs (staying safe from hitting 20) and resume my downloads again. The stuff in the download section is user created material so there is no sponsorship. It actually helps pull in more members as members have to register to download.

Also, 15mbs is how many GB a month?

I'd read the fair usage policy on the "Unlimited" stuff, generally they are not unlimited, they WILL be capped to some extend. $25 a year...I'd be very suspicious. If they can provide ALL that monthly bandwidth etc at that cost I would definatly go for it, I am just trying to help :) .

    Thanks.

Alright so I asked my host about how much it would cost to upgrade bandwidth and this is what they told me it would cost $30 per additional Mbit and I need atleast 6Mbit upgrade at this time in order to avoid charges .

Has anyone heard of Photobucket image outsourcing for websites? It seems like a steal and I don't see anything on their site for a limit.

Also what about Amazon S3 image hosting:
    http://aws.amazon.com/s3/

15 cents per GB of storage, and 20 cents per GB transfer, charge for what you use.

My sites output is approx 16.1mbit - how much GB does this correlate to?

I'm so glad I don't have this problem... I recommend to everyone that you make a website with a hosting company that offers unlimited bandwidth.

Well I originally had a 10Mbit Unmetered Bandwidth @ $75/mo, but because of heavy traffic I had to upgrade to a 100mbit port and they dont have unmetered bandwidth for that port :(

edit ok I ran a internet analyizer and it said that my main page was 19.7734451293945mb....clearly this has to be the problem, though I cant see how they got that big!

    Hello,
you'd need to check all your image and content first and see if it can get compressed/sent compressed. Many files, especially images, can be dramatically reduced in size, just as the website's code. Many browsers also accept gzipped files to be sent. Browsers send the accepted compression formats with each http request. By having your server send content compressed when possible, you could also save a lot of bandwidth.

If your main page is 19Mb in size that is ALMOST definatly one of your main problems....your main page will be loader by Search Engines, people bouncing from website to website, etc. By those figures I can see that 53 home page loads would be taking up 1Gb of bandwidth....literally being given away.....a web hosting companies dream really...

    Thanks.

    19MB?

Firebug tells me 232,4KB... 19MB LOL

    Where did you get that?

Just a little hint from me...

Check the size of this graphic:

    http://www.ps3hax.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/img0089f.png

1,5MB... you should definitely compress graphics... 3x1,5MB on one post means 4,5MB... the graphics are 640x480px, totally wasted bandwidth and hdd space.
Convert them from PNG-24 to JPG

Yes I fixed the issue with the massive size I hope. For some odd reason my thumbnails in the posts were not being resized, so say 600x600 would be 3mb in size, it would show resized to say 10x10 but it would still be 3mb in size....

I added CSS and HTML compression to homepage :)

I also compressed all my images till they looked decent with photoshop and now my total image size for the homepage is 115kb :)

Hopefully this will help the bandwidth issues

Glad you got sorted mate. Now you can work on improving it as you do it, keeping it robust, CSS is a definite in this day and age and the capabilities of scripts, etc. Well done.

    Thanks.

Stop hotlinking of images on your server.
May be there is a bandwidth too happening.

ah, yes. You can use a rule in .htaccess file to prevent other hosts than your domain to use your images. But you should still show images for browsers who don't specify from which domain they request the file since they could be browsing your website. But these are rare cases and usually won't do much with minimal resources usage and since most views would still be blocked, hotlinking is discouraged.

Generally, blocking is fine, but the requests are still made. You can also ask the hotlinks to be removed by checking your logs and asking big infringer.

If you feel like it... you can place rules in .htaccess to replace request from other SPECIFIC domains for your images into an ad for your website, porn images or other things that would be unwanted on the hotlinker's website. Well you can pretty much mess the way you like with foreign request for your stuff :p
