Google adwords is pretty good. But, it all depends on many factors such as landing page, kW, quality score and etc..Aside from all this, you can make money as long as you know what your doing.
It is mostly not useful for small companies, may be used as an additional brand promotional campaigns since the advertisements are shown in mails and many forms where the users are not going to buy or apply for your products.
If you know what you are doing, you will see good results but if you are new and have noo experience or knowledge in adwords, you can loose money extremely quickly. I would go through the AdWords learning center to get some knowledge on this stuff.

I use it to advertise b2b services and it works reasonably well. Nothing beats good old SEO as you never pay for these clicks.
