Same reason every grocery store charges different prices - different business model with different profit margins. They buy at wholesale and get to decide what they want to charge for retail.

People starting out new are always on the look out to penetrate the market at the cost of existing reputed players. They always resort to discounts and cheap offering... to lure potential customers and hence the difference in the pricing.

Recently i was buying a .in domain on one site I dont remember I think on Godaddy the price was $15/year and I bought the same .in on Domainsite it cost it just $4/year I was shocked to see this difference and I was wondering why a gap of $11 between the two and I checked for the same on another site and the price there was $21/year.
Yes I agree profit margins differ for every registrar but a gap of $11 is just too much IMHO

The $4 is a teaser rate only good for the first year. When you go to renew it, it will be $14 a year. A lot of registrars run similar promotions (including GoDaddy) to get you to buy a domain and then increase the price with renewals. There can be huge differences with service between different registrars with some making you jump through hoops to transfer a domain out, and then there are the low priced shady outfits like RegisterFly which caused the loss of domains for thousands of people and the rest to pay $29.99 to keep their domains. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I primarily use Moniker and have a volume pricing agreement, but even if I could save a few bucks by transferring it to another registrar, it just isn't worth it.

domain transferring may be a good solution but every time you need to modify cname and mx records if using soem enterprise email service and about my domain i bought it at 5$ and now on renew it going to be 9$ not a big diff. may be companies are charging for their brand value in domain registration business

Ya thats an unethical busines spractice of many of the registrars.however as far as .in domains are concerned you can actually get them from Indian domain registras for Rs 200 which is about $4 and the price usually remains constant. I think a lot of the uenthical behaviour comes towards .info domains...first year just $0.99 nd folllowing years around $7..that sucks
