Tracking Organic Click Traffic????

Does anyone has tips on how to suss out incoming PPC versus Organic web traffic?

I'm testing out a site with Urchin, but I've found it to be somewhat confusing. I can view a break down of Sessions by Referrer, but I'm still unsure of how to compare this to the stats that Urchin lists for our landing page (which is shown in pageviews).

As a general example, here's what I see...

    6000 - Total Sessions
    (2500 - Non Referrer / 2500 - Search Engines / 1000 - Other )

I have all the PPC campaigns heading to a landing page AND using referrer ID's. Urchin reports this in such as way that I'm not sure how to define it. They use the term "Count", but there's no definition for this.

Adwords/Overture reports approximately 6000 clicks thrus.

    Urchin reports...

8500 - Landing Page (requested files pageviews)
or... 5200 - Landing Page (entrance pageviews)

Referrer Queries are shown at 11,000 for this same landing page????

I would have thought that the entrance pageviews for the landing page, and the referrer queries would be similar to the total PPC numbers?

I'm also confused as how to take these numbers and then break out traffic coming in from organic searches. The only info I can see in Urchin is 2500 sessions from search engines (but there's no way to define organic versus ppc).

    Any suggestions? Comments?

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

First thing that comes to mind: why aren't you using Google Analytics?

It is completely free, will show you the difference b/w organic and paid search traffic, and links to your adwords account which you already use...

In terms of omniture, you need to set up a filter: http://blogs.omniture.com/2009/03/10/organic-vs-paid-search-detection/ that should help you configure it properly.

    That may be of use.

I too would suggest using Google analytics. It is pretty straight forward to install the code on your site and once it is there you can easily track how many visits you are getting and the traffic sources that sent the visitors.
There are separate breakdowns for organic and PPC searches and you can find out the landing pages that people arrived on.

You probably aren't aware but it's a 5+ year old topic that you have bumped. The OP would've solved his problem by now and moved on.
