Right now, I just want to collect my visitors emails by saying at the end of my article "if you would like to receive email updates of my articles etc. etc." Is there a plugin? a program I need? a widget? how does that work? Thanks
I guess it depends exactly how you want to manage your email list...You could simply put a webform at the end of each article which visitors could enter their email (and any other info you want to collect) and then on clicking submit, an email with the details would eb sent to you to manually add to your mailing list. Or you could use an email marketing service like mailchimp which helps you create webforms that automatically compile your visitors email addresses when they submit the form. You can then send out bulk email through the system.
you can use icontact, constantcontact and others. you could even have a simplest form that sends a thank you email and add yourself to the BCC: list. then use Gmail's labelling options.
whoops! you want to know who's on the web huh! anyway, put links anywhere in the body of your article, so that if they are interested to update their emails by you regarding your works, they will just click the URL. i'm sure, it will works. try it.
Now that you have ideas on how to collect the emails why not take it one step further and look for ways to entice the visitors to give this information up, I find that by offering something of value for free, more people are willing to give up this very valuable information. By simply having a place where you expect them to give you these details out of their own and in exchange for nothing from your side does not work as well as many people might think it does. The secret is to add value for them in order for them to give you their details and this also goes a long way towards beginning to establish the trust relationship to make the list which you build worth something. Hope this helps and all the best!
I think you can improve your website to enable your visitors can leave messages to you. Especially leave their email address. I used to work in a online store, that website just has that function. And many people left their messages. The effect is not bad. So I strongly recommand you to have a try.
I'll second the Mailchimp recommendation. I started with their free account and its a great little service.
