Have you run any of these through a dns black list service? It would be interesting to see how many are being caught.
A lot of people do use hijacked IPs to do spamming. I think a better solution for you to stop the spam from coming through the contact form may be to use captcha instead of blocking out good ips.
Ah, ok, i didnt know that. All i know is that they keep advertising viagra. (viagra dot it) I havent checked any these IP's, but nobody knows about the form apart from the bots. Rob
I had a smiliar thread here at DP, but i have stopped it since we cant be sure of the final IP, so its unfair to ban ip's when u dont know for sure. If someone uses a bot, he would be smart enough to use a proxy. So whats the point.
I think you over estimate the intelligence of these people. Many will be using proxies but certainly not all. Secondly, how many legitimate visitors do you receive from anonymous proxies? There is no advantage to a spammer in using a proxy if it isn't anonymous and your legitimate visitors will be using non-anonymous proxies if they use them at all.
streety, you are wrong .. most spam i noticed .. came using high-anonymous proxys.. it takes a few days.. and then that ip is blacklisted in the spam sites.. as open proxys.. and so on.. as someone above said , people who spam .. normaly know what they are doing best idea is to use fatinfo_guy's segestion an Image test (captcha)
I think we are arguing over semantics here, many / most - does it really make much difference? Reading my post back I'm not even sure what my point was, I think it was mainly that I don't like spammers and generally prefer to think of them as ignorant. Yeah some sort of CAPTCHA is a must these days but do bear in mind that they can increasingly be read by bots now through the use of OCR techniques. If you're checking over each message personally before doing anything with it this might be overkill but you could look at filtering messages with Akismet which is designed to catch spam comments at blogs. A more proactive approach might be a project called Bad behaviour - http://www.homelandstupidity.us/software/bad-behavior/. Probably overkill but I would recommend anyone displaying user submitted content immediately on their site to look into these two tools.
