    Scenario 1:

So say I'm deciding on a main keyword “data entry work at home” I type it into google and get my results. I will provide an ex.

The number one site is a directory. The number two position is another directory, however with an /index page. Now, say if the number 2 website with that index has like 200 links for that index page, does that refer to how much content is related around the keyword? Would that mean I could easily rank if I put my work into it for a couple weeks?

    Scenario 2:

This will be providing another keyword example, because that is what I'm working on right now.
Say if I'm looking up the keyword “work from home opportunity” and my results come up like this:

Aritcals are popping up second, so would this be an easy keyword to rank if I campaigned around “work from home opportunity” for several weeks? That is building up relevancy, as well as having keyword variations.

Now when you look at the keywords I have been referring too, it seems like most of the sites haven’t put together their campaigning exactly around those keywords. What I mean is, for like “work from home opportunity” the keywords seem scattered whiten the website title and description. Now if I put together a really relevant campaign around “work from home opportunity” would it be easy to get ranked?

Sorry if I caused some confusion, I'm just really confused myself and this is something that I think maybe a lot of people wonder. If someone understands what I'm trying to explain, please do. Any help will be greatly appreciated! I have spent the past few days coming up with keywords and really, breaking things down to make sure I can get the results I want. I know though, it still may not work out that way. Thanks everyone, that is if you understand me! lol

I didn't understand the first issue, I'm afraid, but I think I get what you're referring to with the second.
Yes, I would agree with you that the sites are not specifically targeting the term, so they havn't been using it as titles, or in urls.
However, there is usually a reason for that, and that is that the term doesn't get much search volume, 'work from home opportunity' gets 1,600 searches a month globally - on a top spot you could reckon to get 30-40% of that traffic - and that's worldwide traffic.
You might think 640 a month is worth going for as part of a longtail strategy - but again I'll stress, it's going to be much less than that if you only rank locally, and the thing about longtails is , you need to get lots of them working for you.

To be honest - I'm an SEO consultant & you're confusing the heck out of me, so you must be confusing the heck out of yourself too! ;-)

I've no idea what you're asking - but it seems to me that you're completely over analyzing.

Here's my advice - spend less time analysing, and more time just doing - and try to pick less competitive niches.

In the time that you've spent just posting this question, I could have probably done my simple keyword research, and built the site ;-)

So do I. Use exact match - it's an adwords tool - phrase and broad match have no meaning outside of an adwords campaign

That's too confusing. I'm not exactly sure what your problem is. I'm not sure what problem you have here. If you are familiar with exact and broad matches then you should be able to understand this.
