As we all know back linking is the best way to go. Just keep working at it this is your sure way to high rank and traffic.
I have to agree backlinks work therefore if you spend you time or money doing anything else your wasting that time or money. Although after you get the ranking you want, you will want to develop a diversity strategy but for now I would concentrate on building one way links from relevant content.
I still think that one of the best and cheapest ways of gaining targeted trafffic is setting up a long term presence on Twitter. There is a right way and a wrong way to market with Twitter and so many are doing it wrong. If done correctly it can be absolute dynamite.
Try to find blogs on the travel niche and offer to guest post. That gives you one more backlink and, probably, targeted traffic.
