I have hosted two websites with xyz company in USA and about a week ago my both websites went down and after 4 days of delay i received following email from the company. What should be anyone's reaction to such hosting company?????? I really got frustrated with their this kind of service..........
My interpretation. 1. 4 days is too long to provide an answer for a downed server. We know within 30 seconds if a server is not working correctly, within 30 minutes all relevant information is available to affected customers (we do need to check out whether we can recover the server or not), and within 60 minutes most sites will be operating on new servers. 2. They obviously don't have a separate backup system. It's more likely their "backup" consisted of a spare drive on the same server or was a figment of their imagination. 3. They will not be paying for data recovery. Consider your data gone if you don't have your own backup. 4. If they had so many spare servers available they should have been offering space on them within 60 minutes, not waiting 4 days to let you know 5. Some hosts are just plain bad. As Monfis say, change hosts. Their excuse and timing is lousy.
When we need hosting for our sites, we always want to cooperate with a hosting provider who can give us a good service. As we all know, good service is most important, since it can ensure our sites run well, so I think you may change a hosting provider.
It was very unprofessional of them to inform you 4-days after the fact. Accidents happen but this sounds more like negligence. I'd cut your losses and switch hosting providers.
it's totally unprofessional. Obviously they weren't making backups, or hadn't set it up correctly, and futilely spent 4 days trying to recover a bust disk. Happened to me once. Tends to happen more on Windows servers, in my experience.
C'mon now, let's not make this a Windows Vs Linux discussion or I'll be forced to ask why all the hacked web servers we hear about on these forums are running Linux
That happened to me before with one of those ebay unlimited host, since then I buy reseller hosting from blue host to create a new cpanel for each domain. Not worth trying to save money when it comes to hosting..
Would be more concerned that someone running a hosting company in the USA for "12 years" has such bad english. Unfortunately bad things can happen no matter how careful any organisation is but that is why you ensure you have appropriate SLAs in place. Its how organisations react when things go wrong that is a much better test of them. I suspect that your using a budget host and you've now discovered the true cost of low prices
No dear im not using budget hosting...paying in full and i just tried them coz this is one of my x-classmates brothers company..another lesson that i got is to search for all options before going blindly with anyones reference.
They really didnt have any backup anymore. Next year i am 100% sure i will switch. Plus read the following email and is there any logic for giving customer the option to have backup service at different locations? As if asking tell us where you will like to die next time.
I think we'd all guessed that. I wouldn't have thought that an "electro mechanical failure" would not stop a data recovery company from recovering your data most of these companies can remove the platter and work on them directly. They just compound their lies. I've just read their original email where they said "probably hosting your website". This is suppposed to be shared hosting, don't they know what sites are located on what servers? Sound like complete disorganization or a company with a couple of servers trying to make out they are larger than they are because they have so many servers they can't be sure what sites are located where. Why are you waiting until next year? Are you mad? Get out of there now. Yes. They can blame someone else when it goes pear-shaped next time (server crashes DO happen), they will be able to charge you more than they pay so make a profit on the backup service, and it will not be a cheap option. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they took your money, didn't pay for the backup service, and then blamed them when something went wrong. I can understand people being charged extra for VPS and dedicated server backups and for it being an add-on, but not shared hosting. Shared hosting backup, onto a proper - and separate - backup system, should be provided as part of the hosting service.
The only thing that I can add is that the English in the letter sounds like either it was written by someone with limited education, trying to sound educated, or someone who doesn't speak English naturally. The letter is written horribly. I would change hosts just because of that.
What is the relevance of you paying in full? A budget host is a budget host irrespective of if you pay annually, monthly or hourly.
The English is broken in most of that message, it's probably run by a bunch of incompetent bricks from a third-world country. At this point there isn't much you can do but accept your losses and move to a more well-known host such as DreamHost (love them), or Site5 or HostGator.
To check out if they are really sending the hard disk to a company in US ask for Fedex tracking number and if they provide then may be its real issue or else its something crap
I'd second the suggestion to move away now if they provide a refund. The same thing happened to me at the end of august this year, when hostv dot com had a crash for several of their VPSs, and despite advertising dual layer backups as well as offsite backups... were not able to recover anything. Luckly I had my own backups and hostv issued a full refund for the >$800 package, so I just moved to another hosting provider. But a lot of people were burned by this "disaster" (as the hosting company called it) because they relied upon the offsite backups. In my opinion no amount of money is going to restore trust in an host that can't restore their servers quickly (or as in hostv's case, fulfill the advertised promises). I think the best reaction is to move away asap.
