Keyword density refers to the number of times that a keyword or keyword phrase occurs in an article. The more times a keyword appears, the denser the article. When people outsource article writing, they often ask authors to write with a specific keyword density in mind (measured in percentage).

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page.

Keyword Density usually used by search engines to categorize a site's theme, and to determine which terms the site is relevant to.

depending on the search engine, and what version of their algorithm they are using, and how recently they found your site. For example, if you slap adsense on a new page, and take a look at it, the ads are usually targeted towards the page title. Then the bot comes and takes a look, and the ads get more targeted towards the content of the page.

as people said it is ratio of total no. of keywords and keywords that you are optimizing. But my advise if you are trying to optimize the content never think about keyword density , proximity and prominence . just write natural content it will help you more...

Keyword density is keyword + density, which refers to how many keyword in one article, for example if there are 10 keywords in an article with 1000 characters, the keyword density of this article is 10/1000, i.e. 1%.

Keyword Density is more or less how many times a keyword is is used in a article, if you had a 200 word article and you used your keyword twice within this 200 word article, you'd have a keyword density of 1%. Keyword density is rather important when it comes to on-site SEO, you don't want to repeat the same keywords too many times. This may cause Google to sandbox your website for keyword spamming.

It means the utilization rate of keyword in the web page online. Because search engines use it to categorize a site's theme, keywords needs a correct keyword density, too low or too high are not useful for site, it need be
    balanced correctly.

Keyword Density = No. of times appear keywords or phrases / total number of words on the page X 100.

4% to 7% is the better density.

Take my advice and forget keyword density. obviously you need to be dropping your keywords into your content but focus on writing for humans not search engines. Agonising about the keyword density everytime you add content is a waste of your time. It would be far better to just write good content for humans and spend your time throwing links with anchor text to those pages.
