How to start from ZERO link building for a new website?

I would absolutely not advise any paid links in any directories unless it's Yahoo directory, as Google lost love for it...

start posting your website on forums and niche related saltes

 

Yes you all people said correct that we need to start with Directory Submission and them go for Commenting, Article submission, and then do some good link exchange.

 

yahoo directory is WAY overpriced. If you want to blow that kind of cash, hire someone to build a bunch of links for you.

 

Is there 'backlink police' that let GOOG know that your sites URL is spread all over the "bad" websites?

I don't remember seeing a 'Website Link Profile' option in webmaster tools...

 

Check the back link profile of your top competitors. I use tools.citationlabs.com to get a wealth of back links from my competitors. Then I try to get links from those sources.

You need to avoid like the plague spamming links from computer generating link tools. Google will find them and not be happy with you.

You need to be submitting your sitemap, and submit to search engines first.
2) submit to as many free directories as possible
3) submit to high PR article marketing directories with backlinks to your website
4) link exchange/ link requests from other blogs
5) guest blogging
