If you wrote the script yourself make sure the connections are being closed as soon as they are not required anymore.

The thing why do I ask this is because for one site of mine I should lower the number of connection, but I want it to still be so reasonable that in case of traffic spike it can handle. I want to lower number of connections to design it to stop work in case of DoS attack and to continue to work when attack is over :). I have some more internal reasons (each connection is own thread so it waste some resources).

For most people, too much hassle with Digg fraud/spam
Whatever you want to call it
Too many powerful Digg users that group together to make content popular. Sure, you should post your stuff there but don't expect much.

Just increasing the limit in apache is just plain stupid. As Shoemoney says the db will be the weakest limit. Apache can easily handle 255 threads, but your db wont unless its a 4-way xeon/opteron. Apache can send 255 10 mbfiles without breaking a sweat on a decent server, a database cant really handle more than maybe 2xCPUs active threads very good in parallel - they will just pile up and make everything even slower. Thus, it's much better to limit your connections on apache than on mysql since apache will just make the client wait until a thread is free, mysql on the other hand will give the user nasty errors when it runs out of free connections (if it's even responsive at all, 100 concurrent running mysql threads on most boxes will send your machine to unresponsive-land-2.0).

And "no", QPS or active threads isnt the same as running threads.

So is the goal to just get 55k pages views? It seems like you're fascinated with just getting the most views but I'm not sure there is a strategy behind it? I gather you'll get looky-loo adsense clicks. Is there some Warhol'ian 15 minutes of fame thing going on? Are you now just writing stories for the sole purpose of getting to Digg's front page? Why?

There are MFA sites and now there are MFD sites?

    I don't use Apache, I'm using Tomcat. Mostly I don't use db.

Bingo, I have problems with open file connection if I set my number of threads too much, so I have to lower that and I need good number to set.

I think idea MDF isn't bad at all. Lets say that 1% of digg people will bookmark your site and come later. He might have steady traffic in the future and lots of backlinks.

Moto, I think you are doing good work :). My congrats :)

Didn't they find out that PlentyOfFish.com wasn't earning anywhere near that amount? He just did it for publicity if I recall.

    Nice job.

Ironically, all 3 of the homepage Diggs I got in the past were rejected by Slashdot! Now I know why Digg is better...

Slashdot doesnt post spam? If you would follow slashdot and digg for a while you'd notice the difference. Digg is made up by webdesigners and apple fanbois, slashdot is for the real programmers.

Well the problem I see with these 'tricks' is that the traffic lasts for 1-2 days. I see in your charts too; you have some HUGe traffic and then from day 3 or 4, back to same ole small traffic. This is why I DON'T use them. I would rather work on my small trafic (natural one, not under "steroids") and eat my frustration while trying to increase it. It's nice to see such a huge traffic, I even tried stumbleupon out of curiosity once, but it's not the way i want to make "business". I had a serious traffic that day, but then I was back to sqare one .. So . I preffer not to use these.

I'd bet money on Slashdot effect power over Digg right now. There was some story about a woman whose phone got stolen and she was able to track it and a whole melodrama etc happened. She raved about the Digg effect - a new word she learnt about when traffic from Digg came. When Slashdot traffic came knocking later (may have been a few days between), her site went kaput - guess she'll learnt another word then.
