Hi, many sites that have high PR values are not interested in trading links with my site which is zero in PR. I am wondering how I can increase PR without having too many backlinks from high PR sites? Do good contents help? anything else? thanks
PR comes 100% from backlinks, not content. Having great content will help in gaining backlinks naturally. Trading links is not a good way to build links as they are not "natural" links and are easy for google to identify and devalue or ignore.

You can improve internal linking of your site in order to get some PR and then go for some high quality external links in order to climb up the ladder.
Blog commenting and directory submission will help you a lot in getting the high page rank for your site in no time. Also if you can afford directory submissions it works wonder for you.
You can buy relevant links or have a great site that people will naturally want to link to. The number one mistake people make is not putting enough time into a site. If you can't be one of the best sites in your niche, then your options are limited for gaining natural quality backlinks. Even if you manage to get great links, if your site is crap, what will happen when one of the 10,000 google raters visit your site and rate it? Be the best, everything else comes so much easier. I personally would forget about PR - I don't even pay any attention. There are niche sites with low PR making six figures a year. I have PR3 sites that have 10 times the traffic as other PR6 sites I have.

I agree with you. The PR comes only if the relevance is not important for Google. Most of the search results I analyze are based on better relevance rather than high PR.
PR is depends on many factors but if you do not want to concentrate more on getting the links then work out on your structure and the content of the site. Because if your structure and content is good then it will attract the visitors which will be increase your daily hits with different ip's and this will surely give the boots in your PR.
good page rank is not only depending on a particular aspect.it is depending on your site content,link building,back links,site designing etc...its a combination of all the aspects.in my experience getting a good page rank is only done from quality back links.
Follow google web master guide. You need to do some on page optimization. put suitable titles, description, keywords, and create robot.txt, site map file. do site verification of google, yahoo, bing. when you use images in ur site use alt tag with relevant keyword. keep relevant contents in your site. make proper inlinks using your keywords. check Crawler error. use h1 tag with keywords. Avoid : hidden texts, hidden links, check for broken links and correct HTML. don't use cloaking or sneaky redirects. You can do Social Book marking to get links and more traffic.
