Google has already started showing those search results in realtime with the Google Instant Search. What are your thoughts on it regarding SEO?

I've just got done going through the new feature hands on. Pretty cool addition to the search engine. I don't think it would do anything but help sites, for the fact that it makes searching that much faster.

It will definitely drop visitors that rely on long keyword phrases. Example: If I rely on traffic that searches for key phrase "Used Lamps Indiana", users will see many other sites offering used lamps before the user is done typing the whole phrase. As they type, they will see sites that rank high for "Used Lamps" before they finish adding on the "indiana" to the phrase. Therefore, the webmaster that relied on more refined search phrases, loses customers.

I think that what Google Instant will do is force webmasters to shorten key word phrases. The longer the key phrase, the less likely a search user will be to finish typing it before they see results they can use.

I haven't see the instant search yet; are the Adwords ads also showing and changing along with the list of results?

I cannot see Google instant in my country, as Instant is currently available only in United States.
Anyway, I think SiteExpress is right. It forces webmaster to shorten their keywords.

Yep, I think the days of the long tail keyword bidding are over.

I think it is really going to depend on the site. It will definitely hurt a lot of sites, while pushing others way ahead.

I also think that it will be interesting to see how this affects mobile users. Since a good portion of today's searches are done via mobile gadgets, I am wondering what the impact of it will be.

I'm watching NBC news now to see how it works; I have to think from the demos I've seen that it'll end up being distracting to the searcher?

I have not had a ton of time to explore this but at a glance I agree. It's not so much rankings, but I think user interaction with it may throw a wrench or two in things based largely on your premise.

I am going to try and see what happens when folks essentially click a truncated search term. I don't see too many huge issues though.

I am also interested in seeing if I can make some sense out of this and the 3 adwords tools having crazy different results.

OK finished seeing the example shown by the news anchor. From what I could tell, the Adwords ads were changing as the search results were changing. But do those count as impressions for the advertiser (even though they were shown briefly during an instant search)? I could see that as seriously affecting CTRs for sites since their ads will only show for a split-second...

Google also confirmed that the rankings will not change in Instant search.

No, this change does not impact the ranking of search results.

A lot of the replies here seem to be reliant on everyone liking Google instant. I didn't like it personally, it kind of got in the way of my typing so I turned it off. It might be useful for people that type really slow and perhaps do not know what they're searching for. To piggy-back on an example brought up earlier in this thread, if I was searching for used lamps and I lived in Indiana, chances are that I wouldn't stop at just used lamps regardless of the page put in front of me because it would be lacking in relevance. Indiana is going on there.

I don't think this Instant will affect much of anything. I also don't think it'll go over well with everyone.

As mentioned by 'Siteexpress', it certainly is a long tail killer.
After the mayday update, this is another one that will hit hard on the long tail traffic to a site which is considered more targeted.

It's time to target the more competitive single worded and two-worded keywords now.

No doubt Google Instant Search functionality is a great feature and made searching even faster than previous version and as far as, I have analyzed till now, it will not affect SEO techniques.

They have not rolled out instant search for mobile devices as of now but they plan to do it in the near future.
