Do you think Bing will be able to seriously compete with Google in the future?

So I was just thinking, do you think Bing really has a chance to compete will Google in the future.

I mean just as microsoft has an extreamly strong position selling their Windows, Google has almost the same position on search. So do you think they can challenge Google in the future like Firefox did with Explorer or what do google have that makes them so good?

Interesting question, last I heard Bing and Yahoo were doing some kind of merger. Usually Yahoo and Bing pull in very few results and some of my sites are ranked very high on those engines yet not much traffic.

I think Google has pretty much become the norm and while Bing and Yahoo might also have pretty good search results, unless they come out with something truly unique such as Pagerank or some other type of tool which is favored by webmasters, they don't really stand a chance.

If anything I think if Facebook came out with some kind of search engine they could probably give Google a run for their money since so many people already use it.

I think Google will just keep getting bigger and bigger, Bing won't really be able to compete.

Microsoft has been trying to overtake Google long before Bing came out. Live Search, the predecessor of Bing, never went anywhere so they created Bing. Bing has had an insignificant increase in market share but, after more than a year and pouring hundreds of millions into advertising it, it's been essentially flat.

No, Bing and Yahoo are NOT merging. Yahoo is only using Bing's algorithm as of last week. You will see no advertising or branding of Bing on Yahoo and most of the revenue generated goes to Yahoo, not Microsoft.

Microsoft leads in two markets: desktop operating systems and office productivity (Word). XBox could be thrown in there if you wish but that might be OT. Other than that, Microsoft has never lead in any other category.

Microsoft has been trying to compete with Google for a decade and has been VERY unsuccessful. Yahoo! did a much better job of it than Microsoft did. MS had 8-10% marketshare where Yahoo! had 15-20% marketshare, depending on the month. Neither of these have ever come close to Google's 65-70% marketshare. Nor will they IMO.

Bing is just Live with a facelift. Other than related search suggestions and a few other tweeks, MS has just put lipstick on a pig... but it's still a pig. I knew about Bing about a year before it came out from our Microsoft reps. Even they were saying they were simply giving Live a "facelift" and looking to rebrand it.

Yahoo had a headstart though on Google.

Since Bing is now providing SERPs for Yahoo, I think they have a real shot at it.

If MS decides to do something stupid, like hide advertising links within the search results or make people have to scroll down to see the results, then they may be able to take 20 or so percent. Not much more though. I think Google would have to do something really, really stupid to get all the non-internet savvy off of it.

That's technically impossible , Either google will have to collapse or Bing will have to grow up crazilly

Bing provides the search engine. That's all. Yahoo gets the majority of the revenue. Yahoo gets the credit. Bing gets nothing.

If you could combine the market shares of both companies, they are still less than half of what Google is today but Yahoo and Bing are two different companies and Bing is less than half the size of Yahoo!

The only way Bing can improve itself is to do something other than search or do something revolutionary to it. But Microsoft is not a company known for innovation so that's not going to happen. Look for Microsoft to give up on Bing just like all its past ventures.

True. Google has abandoned many venture too though.

Microsoft is playing catch up. It's possible that they could snatch up some fancy company or actually come up with something on their own, but most people look to Google for the clever innovations. Kind of like Apple.

I think Google had a game plan from the beginning and stuck to it (be able to know as much as possible about the users and provide it to the advertisers/publishers).

I think the only way that Microsoft/Bing can do anything "new" is to provide something revolutionary to mobile users.

If you think like a business owner of Bing probably yes, because you would strive for more to build your business better and better.

I think never! Google hold great quality as the pioneer in industry serving best services where Bing is relatively trying many things to capture Market Share

Unless yahoo and Bing dones something totally unique and unimaginable, they will be behind the race. At the moment google seems to be well ahead of Bing and Yahoo.

It will take a lot of time to get a competitor for Google But has now emerged as a brand and most f the internet users will say that they only know one search engine that is Google, I've seen many of users type the first thing in the address bar is Google, It has become the brand just because of the buzz among the people and the quality of the results it shows

Not the same at all. Altavista and Excite were like dictionaries. Any one will do the job. Then Google came along and came up with much better results and far easier to use. The other two just sat there as Google added applications and the rest is marketing history. Google is a rapidly changing, forward thinking company with lots of money to back its activities. You can't beat them by doing the same thing. To do so is like saying some other company can compete with Microsoft by coming out with a Windows clone. Won't happen unless your version does something innovative and different enough to sway people to your product.

It is quite possible with bing after powering the Yahoo results has around 30% of the total search market share with google having a little more than 60% so if they continue improving their algorithms and play with the future products like visual search and real time search, there is a fair chance of bing giving tough time to google.

Things could change suddenly. Web results on facebook are powered by bing. If facebook decide to have a proper search box on their site then google could lose alot of market share overnight

I think i have a better chance of winning jackpot than microsoft has in seriously competing with google. Microsoft just doesn't have the fresh ideas nor the expertise and bright new minds to challenge google in search.

They are already merged, Bing powers all of Google's search results.

I disagree with you. You are wrong. Webmasters do not control what search engine is the norm, the customers do. Customers will use whichever search engine they think will return the most relevant results, and use whichever engine is most convenient for them.

Really? You think it would be ideal for Facebook to start a search engine when Microsoft, one of the largest corporations in the world cannot take on Google?
