This is really wierd. I have a site which is really just sitting doing nothing; I´m not promoting it, I´m not doing any sort of SEO but it´s getting over 100 backlinks added to it every day. They mostly seem to be coming from one source but I haven´t actually added any links from that site. I´m not complaining but I am getting a bit concerned that the big G might find it a bit suspicious and start penalising the site. Has anybody else had this "problem"?
What type of source is it coming from? Check out the URL and see what type of site it is, then go from there.
This happened to me once when one of my forum sites was hacked. I was getting hundreds of links which amounted in a lot of traffic, but the links were for irrelevant things like Acura car parts and pharma.
check what are the sources of the backlinks. If these seems natural, G won't mind at all. otherwise, you may need to be alert.
It is a worrying thing but Google considers a lot of things before penalising a website. If the backlink multiplication is happening from a single source, then Google understands that there could be a competitor doing involved and could be doing this to sabotage your ranking on Google. Repeated acts of spamming from different sources and similar persistent practice might have your site penalised. You can also contact the site owner and notify him/her about this thing.
You should check if these back links are bringing any good traffic or not. BTW is there a Google search query to list all the backlinks?
If your content is really worth, you may get this much of backlinks. If possible send me your URL to get analyzed at free of cost.
It's a pity that so many people have replied to you with ridiculous answers. Google will NEVER penalise you because of sites pointing to you. You have absolutely no control over who links to you and the big G knows this. Getting 100 backlinks a day can only be a good thing. Google may ignore some of those links but others will certainly have a positive effect even if they are not relevant or indeed nofollow. Believe me, automatically getting 100 backlinks a day is a nice 'problem' to have! I'd love to be in that position. In fact seeing as I've cleared things up for you PM me your URL and where you think the links are coming from ;-)
I think you'll find they will penalise you is they feel you are using black hat techniques to gain the hundreds of links! In all honesty you want to be able to control where and who you are getting backlinks from, else you'll end up with a mass of spam links
And how would Google know the difference between you using blac khat techniques to get loads of links and your competitors spamming your site? Any SEO expert who knows what he's talking about will agree with me on this. Google only ignores links. It never penalises your site because of them. I've tested this theory on countless sites and always found it to be true.
I think Google will not penalize but if it doesn't ignore certain handfuls of irrelevant links than there is a high chance that google will consider your site good for that irrelevant category.
i have seen google do things which "they" think is right, not what's fair, so it can well be so, however this is strange, only worry if they are from a low grade site.
