It will take some time to index new URL and updation in webmaster tools...just update XML and HTML sitemaps and submit updated XML sitemap again in webmaster tools...this will help in indexing new URL....

    It may take a while.

Help google along! Make a .htaccess file (or edit your current one!) (if you are on a apache server, with modrewrite, that is)

    use:

    Redirect 301 /old-url.html www. domain. com/new-url.html

Be careful with the above, but if don't correctly, it will tell Google you have moved the above page permanently.

If you are unsure about how to do this, Google it!

If you are using wordpress, then check out deans permalink migration plugin :)

be sure to redirect the old url to new one.. you can do this through .htaccess, or if you are using wordpress, there's a plugin doing the stuff easily..

Use 301 redirect from old to new URL, this will help to pass the value of old page to new page. Also, use webmaster tools to remove old url from Google Index and Cache.

Webmaster tool path to URL removal:
    Dashboard>>Site configuration>>Crawler access>>Remove URL

To remove a page or image, you must do one of the following:
    * Make sure the content is no longer live on the web. Requests for the page must return an HTTP 404 (not found) or 410 status code.
    * Block the content using a robots.txt file.
    * Block the content using a meta noindex tag.

For google crawlers, it may need some time to get your new pages indexed. Don't worry about that, your site will be updated later.

Re up load your changed sitemap which will pick up the changes to your file extension structure. This will then get re-indexed into google

Webmaster Tools is NOT a real-time tool. Most of the screens in WMT only get updated once every few weeks. It is quite possible that they may be showing your new FAQ URL in the SERPs but WMT is showing your old FAQ URL. It will fix itself in a week or two.
