    If you're creating a PAGE, it's going to make a new page. What's baffling about that?

    If you want your homepage to be a particular page, you need to go to your reading settings and set a page as your homepage...

    first create a homepage, then create another page that is blank to show your posts.

    then go to settings > reading > click the a static post radio button > choose your homepage >choose your posts page (the blank one) > click save changes....VOILA...

    Try going into the settings to change your link structure, or see where the page is leading to.
