Help me understand something about ranking

I understand it can take time to get indexed or even rank on 1st page in google. But for sites such as news sites or ones that publish the latest things, how do they rank on 1st page straight away?

For example, there was a tsunami with sharks in antartica, and if you were to search that in google within an hour of it happening there is already heaps of pages ranking for that keyword?

Only reason I'm asking is because I want to add a News feature to a site and want to know how some other sites get 1st on google straight away with new articles

 

If your site has built up credibility with Google for being a site with good unique content being added frequently, Google returns often. There are some websites that the Google Search engine spider never leaves, due to the frequency of new content being loaded.

also you can modify your robots.txt to make the bots returns frequently

You can do it using the old name="revisit-after" content="1 days" meta tag, although I'm not sure how much attention googlebot gives metas these days. Worth a shot however.
