I was offered the chance to buy a domain name of a famous person in US history. I will not say the domain, but he's very famous person in US history. Not as famous as Abe Lincoln or George Washingon, but famous nonetheless. It's a dot com name with his name spelled out just as it's normally spelled out. It's the best possible domain you can have for this person. The seller wants $2,000. How would I be able to capitalize off this domain? How do you make money from a historic figure?
That's why I made this thread, to figure out how to capitalize from such a domain name. What's wrong with the asking price? I'd say it's reasonable.
this is their money in it, eg is it a guy always in the school sylabus? do you like this guy, you cant make a site on some one you hate? is their alot of people who talk about him? is his name always been refered to? if its somethign that heaps of school students need to research for essays each year! then do it.
1. Most likely only college students. 2. He's one of my person heros. 3. Not so many people talk about him, but most people who do talk about him are the educated type. The average person doesn't know much about him. 4. He's referred to a lot in an educational setting. But my question is HOW do you make money. His Adsense clicks are getting less than 10 cents. Impossible to make money from that.
um...can you say "lawsuit"? http://www.rjg.com/basf.html#Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act I did the same with a very well known rising golfer. Settled for 2K. The key is to not get sued but still profit from it.. Famous person in US History? I'm sure relatives will come out of the woodwork with a lawsuit if they can find a way to profit too!
find out how often the name is searched obviously. if you have a massive amount of traffic it doesnt really matter how much each adsense click is worth. you know what you need to do anyway, simply research the searches for KWPs related to the topic and then competition for those KWPs. then you'll know if its an area you'll be able to control. the fact that you are interested in the topic already means you'll be able to write about it easily also which is a plus. do the sums, see how long it would take to get back $2000 if you were in the top ten for the major KWPs of the topic.
He's been dead for 150+ years. I'm not worried about it. In fact, many many people have used his name commercially and have not been sued by anyone. And in fact, he had no children, so he has no descendants. I'm not worried about getting sued by his 12th cousin or whatever.
is it ummm.... Martinlutherking.com ... umm... Sorry... Let me remind myself of the questions again... Collage students talk about him, he's refferd to in a educational setting so... It cant be king then.... uumm... Personal hero's.... Jesus? Noo... he's not talked about much by collage students unless there really religious.. uumm.. Well apart from me really wanting to know who the domain name is named after. Well.. $2.000 is quite alot to ask for a domain name, what PR is it? If its a Pr0.... Then it might be a waste of money evan if it is the best domain name you can get for this one guy, jasonbates.co.uk was $3 and... Its the best domain name you can buy for me and im talked about much by collage students *Specially girls *, but then again am i one of your personal hero's... I dont think so. Well the thing is... Youll have to really think about how you can make the money back from the site, maybe get a Vbulliten licence so peaple can talk about this guy on a foum. Also have some feactures that will bring members back to the site all the time. And feactures that will advertise the site too for example give peaple free email address for example , if you put alot of history about this guy on the site then peaple who are looking for him no search engines and will come to the site. Say they are doing an essay on the guy in collage and they need wto know information about the guy then they will come to your site. You can make money via adsence and affiliation with the likes of amozan if this guy has any books about him. Hope this helps... *If you think you can make your money back then buy the domain name*
From what you say I'm thinking the price is a little on the high side. If you can get it down and make a decent site, then it comes down to the demographics of the visitor as to how you monitize the site.
But according to Google, you need relevant keywords and clicks for his name are getting next to nothing per click. I cannot have a "HistoricPerson.com" and say my keywords are "plasma tvs" and "custom computers."
If you are going to go with Adsense then I would say, forget it, you will never recoup your investment ... unless you get a top placing on the SE's and a lot of traffic, in which case you may get your money back selling the site you would have to build. You have to consider who your primary visitors would be and what sort of targetted advertising aside form Adsense you could use to generate income. Banner sales, affiliate, whatever ...
One way is to create a forum around his life and times. It is hard to say how many fans he has, but subforums could include enough hot topics, for example civil war, reconstruction, even 17th and 18th century clothes styles. Be creative enough and you might be able to generate some traffic and advertising money. It would be a lot of work, is it worth $2000 to get the name? If you wanted to do a history forum site, why not think of your own catchy name? For example instead of jamespolk.com, maybe presidentjamespolk.com or jamespolksite.com would get you the same distance for less money.
the only ways I can think of are: 1. adsense revenue 2. make a book about the guy, get it in the college sylabus, then make it mandatory for students sign up to the site to do online quiz's or something and make a 10 dollar entry free to get into the online quiz section????? Just some ideas
Move on , put the idea on the side . Chances are you will look back after couple of months and thank yourself you did not spend 2 k for it. You can not get stuck on every single idea you have down the road , because we all have many of them and they all seem like the next big thing, but you must be able to narrow them down and justify the ones that really makes sense not just emotionally but rationally as well. I read your thread previously about starting out from 0 and make it to $ 10 k in a year . I say spend the $ 2000 for building content, links and other ways to market your site , and buy a domain for 7 bucks or maybe a spend a hundred or two on one with some PR and backlinks. For that money you can give a pretty good jumpstart for a new site , that would start bringing in revenue before you spend the whole amount. Just my 2cents, stojan
All very wise comments, thanks. And it is a good point, for $2k you should be able to get a site with traffic already coming to it. wiz
Exactly. I'd offer the guy $1,000, take it or leave it. (Actually, *I* wouldn't offer him anything - I'll be a similar domain could be thought up, with a little creativity.)
Another thing: the poster above is right in saying you should save your money and move on to another idea, or go about this one differently. The trouble for many of us here - myself certainly included - is not a lack of ideas, but a lack of time to take advantage of them.
