    personnally I would use drupal.org maybe not the best for forums but very good!

    It depends on the project, and the budget. I think VBulletin is the best option to run a forum, however, it can be quite expensive if you are planning to use the CMS option.The license is around $300.

    I beg to differ - IPB. The latest version has a section for ads, you just shove your code in there and ads magically appear in all the good spots.

    I have two IPB forums so I may be a little biased :)

    Yeah personally I find SMF more reliable considering the support from its community, so most of the mods and plugins are up-to-date, and better built-in features by itself. For paid forum software, VBulletin works better.

    phpbb- if you are looking for a free option, its good..

    I would recommend Mybb. I have a quiet experience in myBB, it is a best forum to start with. If you have money and can send hundreds of dollars then move onto vBulletin.
