Regarding the delay between private messeges

I keep on getting this when I am trying to send out PM's. This forum requires that you wait 21600 seconds between sending private messages......

I understand that this is for new users and is to prevent spam. However I have been registered since Jun 7th 2010 . How do i prevent this messege from appearing. If I pay is this problem resolved?

    Thanks

This site's primary purpose is not for you to PM people, sorry.

I had only sent 1 messege in the last 24 hours. When I attempted to send another private messege to someone else regarding purchasing a domain it prevented me from doing so. Does this mean you can only send up to 1 private messege every 6 hours?

Depends on who the user is and if they contribute to the site or not.

Participate on DP with quality posts and your problems will disappear. It's a sort of magical feature that DP has installed.

    I do..
Posts like "Thanks", "PM Sent" are great enough to kick you outta here.

    Avoid them.

Shawn or other powers that be,

Just had the same problem. I do understand that you've designed the PM delay to prevent spamming. But my account is over a year old. And 21,600 seconds is a rather long time. I'd say if you make people wait even 15 minutes, you'll prevent 95% of all spam/marketing/whatever you are trying to prevent.

I do not post in the forums and I don't intend to - I'm not a forum kind of guy. DP is also a marketplace - that's primarily how I use it. And mostly as a buyer. I bought a $12,000 site here last year. I just bought some templates $120. I'm about to buy some more from two separate parties ($125 and $100). You mentioned above that "This site's primary purpose is not for you to PM people, sorry." PMing is just a tool, and a useful one when used correctly. The fact that someone wants to communicate with another member more than every 6 hours doesn't mean they're abusing your system.

Perhaps you perceive digital point as a just forum community, designed only active forum / community participants. That's Digital Point's prerogative, and perhaps I'm just not the kind of participant you want. But because of your PM rules, I can't communicate with the sellers of the latter two items I'd like to buy unless I wait 21,600 seconds. And I can't buy it unless I can communicate first. So it's frustrating to me, and penalizes those more active DP participants who meet your odd rules and who might benefit from selling me something.

Based on your rules, responses above, and the other things I've seen in my brief forays into the forum, I highly doubt you'll have much sympathy or concern for my situation here. But I'm guess I'm wondering if there's anyway you can lift the limitation on my account? If you tell me I need to post in the forum, I guess we'll just need to agree to disagree, since I'm not interested in "earning my credentials" for the right to give other DP members my money. If you can do it, great. If not, I guess I'll muddle through.

Separate from that, I'd also love to convince you that 21600 seconds is absurdly overkill. Almost like a vindictive punishment for those unwilling to earn their credentials, more than simple spam prevention. Any way you'd ever consider lowering that to 1200 seconds, or even 900 seconds?

It was 900 seconds between PMs until a few months ago when we were getting overwhelmed with massive PM spam bot networks. People would create 1,000 accounts so they could send 1 PM every second just by cycling the sending account. It's not the true intent to force users to participate before they *really* can use PMs, but forum participation is an easy way to measure if someone is a PM spam bot or not... and 99.99% of users who legitimately need to send more than 1 PM per 8 hours tend to actually participate in the forum at some level. If vBulletin had a way to make users answer a captcha in order to PM, I'd rather go that route, but unfortunately it's not an option yet.

Hi Shawn, I was about to write back on this before you respond. I think I worded my response a bit too strongly. It's clear you and the rest of the moderators here receive enough angry, complaining posts about infractions, wait times, and everything else, without me adding to the din, and I have no doubt you guys are trying to manage things for the best interest of all legitimate DP users. It's silly to think you'd be doing otherwise. It just sounds like you guys face almost insurmountable pressure for the barbarians (spammers) at the gate.

In any case, thanks for the quick reply. I'll wait my 21600 seconds and hopefully the item will still be for sale.

    Erick
