Does the name of sitemap index file matter?

    I am going to be submitting a new sitemap index file to yandex, yahoo, bing, ask and google. Due to technical issues I can't call the index sitemap.xml Does it matter at all to engines if its called something like sitemap2.xml or sitemapindex.xml?

    the sitemap index will contain links to a few large xml.gz files that contain the actual site urls.

    Call them what you want.

    mapindex.html, sitemapindex.html sitemap-index.html smi.html or whatever :)

    What ever you decide to call it, be sure and log into google Webmaster Tools and point them toward the file.
