Depends on the product. You have to identify who would be interested in your product or service and then target the places that target audience can be found. For example it I had a great product or service that would meet a need to those who love Harley Davidson mortorcycles. I would want to find magazines, web sites, forums, etc that cater to that group and market my product in those areas.

If there was a "best" way don't you think everyone would be doing it?

Your question is difficult to answer for two reasons...

First, we don't know what you intend to promote. Different products, services, and niches often benefit from different types of marketing. Certainly where you intend to market your product is impacted by what the product is. If you have an internet marketing related product, this forum would likely be a good place for you to market it (following the rules of the forum, of course). But if you in tend to sell t-shirts, this would not be the right place for you.

The second reason your question is difficult to answer is that there are so many different ways to market products online. A detailed response would give you dozens if not hundreds of options.

Many marketers start out looking for the best single way to market a product... But using a single approach is almost never the best approach. Multiple techniques are usually required to get the best results. And it is best when the multiple techniques which are used are planned out so that they feed into one another, rather than work at cross purposes.

Like the others have said marketing is not just one thing that you do - you usually need to be looking at list building, advertising and getting traffic if you have a product you want to sell (either offline or online). Here are a couple of tips to get you started

    1. Article marketing - uploading articles about your topic with links in your resource/authors bio box - two good article sites to get you started are EzineArticles and GoArticles

    2. Forum and blog commenting - showcase your expertise through posting intelligent responses to other user's questions and have a link to your product in your signature line (forums) or linked to your name (blog comments)

    3. Post your product site to directories and search engines - if you do a Google search you will find plenty of places where you can do this for free

    4. Set up your own blog that is related to your topic and again will showcase your expertise in your chosen niche - also Squidoo lenses, hubpages and free pages like Weebly are also great ways of backlinking to your product site and showing how much you know about your topic

    5. If appropriate affiliate sites like Clickbank and Paydotcom are places where you can promote your product to affiliates that could sell your product for you

Hopefully this will help to get you started
    Best of luck

Yeah depends on your market ... you simply have to know what their trigger points are and where they tend to "hang out" on the web

Make sure that the market you’re targeting matches the product you have. This can surely draw your reader’s attention. You can either use social media marketing or yes, leave your signatures on high ranking blogs.

PPC, SEO, PPV/CPV, Media Buys, Articles, Video, Podcasting, Blogging, Social Media. Anywhere there is a demand for your product, you can find it! If there actually is demand for it.

Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization are the two most proven ways to promote any product online. All other methods, while important, pale in comparison to the results you'll achieve with the first two.

There are many. The 2 best ones I love which DONOT require you to have a website are-
1.Yahoo Answers-Try answering questions related to your product post your affiliate links at the end of your answer.Or you could make 2 accounts and use one to ask a question related to your niche, and the other to answer it.
2.eHow-Once you get approved as an author,BAM.It has a very high PR.I use it.Suppose for a weight loss product,I make a topic ''How To Loose Weight".I rite some good tips or steps and in the end in the resources/recommended area,I post my affiliate link.I make huge. You should try it too.
