What Forum Software To Use?

Discussion in 'Forum Management' started by dieselpowered, Aug 24, 2010.

I am getting ready to release another community and I am REALLY torn on what software to use. I have vBulletin licenses as well as IPB licenses so that is not an issue. Not looking to get into a battle, however, can I get some feedback on what software I should use and why.

If I were to use vBulletin I would use the 3.8.X series as 4.X still has way too many bugs for my liking.

Thanks in advance for your insight!

I suggest you to go with VB all the way.

Can I trouble you for a reason why you say that? Not doubting, just asking.

Thanks so much for your time!

LOL ya I suppose it does ;)

Read through the forums here and basically I think it is coming down to personal choice...the numbers are pretty equal in regards to those who prefer vb or IPB. I suppose another approach I could use, from a SEO perspective, which will index better, IPB with the re-writes turned on, or vBulletin with vbSEO?

    Thanks!

I always tell people to analyze their needs then the software. If I need a huge bells and whistles forum I'd use VB but if I wanted something more focuses and modular in design I'd go with IPB. For me I use MyBB on my forums including my Alexa 5k forum with 5.5 million posts and in about 2 weeks will be the #1 MyBB forum online.

I've had IPB and VB licenses. Overall I find both softwares to be lacking for my needs which are easy upgradability and extremely modular. With MyBB I can add plugins easily and never had issues with updates. They've actually all been very easy.

When I ran phpbb upgrades were a nightmare so I eventually went VB thinking it would be better. It was just as bad. IPB is imho superior forum software and if I was to get a pro paid license software it would be IPB. They seem to have their act together while Internet Brands is obviously ruining VB.

    try smf rc3 it's great
i use it in my forum and have lots of forums running with it
it's light , fast , error free , has lots of themes and mods
and if you have some php knowledge you will like it alot

also vBulletin is beyond talking it's one of the best no doubt , but if you have it already then try something different

No idea about paid softwares. But SMF allows easy upgrades besides being free. Integrating into a portal is very very simple.

There is a reason why Vbulletin is a market leading brand. It is the best forum software that can easily be customized to your business needs thanks to the largest modifications developers community at vbulletin.org.

I agree with profanitytalker, vBulletin is by far the easiest to customise the way you like.

lol...$100 or $140 is still way too much to pay for new untested software and I don't care who wrote it. Who knows how buggy the code is? I've never heard of paying for beta software. What crap. Already a terrible start when it comes to business 101. And remember there won't be any good plugins, modifications, or themes! $100...omg fail.

    Never heard of vBulletin?

As far as many people are concerned that is still in beta at the moment.

XenForo is new but it's looking a lot better than vBulletin and IPB.

If vBulletin is the most reliable that doesn't say much for IPB.

Yes, it is the price for 1.0 official release version with 12 months support, found by previous vb developer team.
And my friend may get a license on the sale day.

Xenforo isn't bad and very potential for adding more features later..
    :)
