Dude if do you have time then spend to get backlinks for your forum and try to join sports forums and get links by signature or invite other members to join your sports forum.
For getting traffic, you need to do promotion on social media sites like facebook, twitter etc. and backlink means incoming links to a website. You'll get higher PR if you have more backlinks.
I would suggest that spend some time doing stuff for yourself. If you wanna have proper SEO done then only hire someone who is responsible and has a good working knowledge of SEO and is updated with the latest norms and industry requirements. But these will be quite expensive. And compromising on quality with someone with lesser fees can prove costly as the campaign might fail. So, it's better off to do things for yourself. All you need is to learn step by step. Everything is available online and you just need to spend 2-2.5 hrs daily.
