Do I Have a Chance of Outranking a Site With Nothing But Thousands of Sitewide Links?

I'm trying to topple a site with a few thousand links pointing back to it for the first slot in the SERPs. Most of its links (about 90%) are coming from the site itself so I was wondering how difficult it would be to outrank it by creating links from other websites rather than how they're doing it, just linking from themselves primarily? The main homepage of the site is a PR 4 for what it's worth.

    EDIT

Upon further investigation it's 99% (thousands) of links are from the site itself and only a dozen or so from outside sites directly linking to it.

Ofcourse you can but the problem is, its not just the number of backlinks or their source that matters. Age and Trust/Priority among many others are the main factors for ranking.
You can surely do some consistent SEO and hope to take the 1st spot but noone will be able to guarantee you this as there are hundreds of thousands of pages with sometimes no backlinks that outrank pages with 1000+ backlinks.

Only links will not matter... else all users with Xrumer would have their sites on the top. Good content, age, authority links are some of the factors which will push you to top

Age of your site really matters too so try to get some really high pr backlinks. Depending on their pr they could be worth hundreds of links.

As mentioned above a few times too, age has quite a bit to do with your rankings as well as your content, backlinks, on-page seo and off-page SEO.

There's a few variables that go into outranking another site, but let me fill you in on something...

A site with 10 PR7 backlinks pointing back to it, will 99% of the time outrank a site with 1,000 PR0 - PR1 backlinks.

Internal links are always good too. Always try and link to another page from within your pages - if you can.

Concentrate on building Authority Backlinks and you will be out ranking everyone in NO time at all.

Back links are very influential. They can literally make or break a site. Good copy and on-page SEO can only take you so far. You need other sites vouching for you. If you have high quality back links you will rank high. It's that simple. A lot of Xrumer links will just mean a few specific type of back links, you won't get DMOZ links, competitor links, and industry-related back links using it. These are the links that can shoot you to the top with only a handful. High quality back links.. the buried treasure and people aren't typically just giving them away. They take some work, hardcore effort, and creativity.
