What's the best setup for using WP as a CMS - a direct alternative to creating a standard php/html website? I thought I'd try something a bit different to what I've been doing with websites and WP seems perfectly suited.
Well, it actually works really well out of the box. Use pages for static pages, you can choose which page to display as the Home.. What more do you want?
A full website but without the 'posts' if you know what I mean? Obviously, I know I can rewrite the urls, etc. - what I want to know is what's the best setup for creating what appears to be a static website?
Lol...you seemed to already have answered your own question. It seemed like your post was just asking for confirmation on this.
Huh? How is answering, "I still think Wordpress is the way to go on this one." in any way an answer to the original question?
There you go. Maybe I'm not understand what you mean by setup. when you say "setup" do you want someone to walk you through in setting up a Wordpress site or what is the best setup such as you using Wordpress as a CMS? I took what you meant by "setup" to be the latter and again I was just confirming what you and the other poster said earlier because initially you seemed unsure.
Maybe I should put it another way - has anyone set up WP as a static website and if so, how did they do it? What worked for them? What plugins were the most useful? Yes, I've used Joomla before (and Mambo) but didn't really like it and it isn't what I'm looking to use this time. But thanks for the suggestion.
Got you! I have never used wordpress for a static site though I most likely will eventually. I found a couple of links for you on the web that may be of use. These are a couple of sites that I personally use when I'm in need of a hack to my website. http://wphacks.com/how-to-use-wordpress-as-a-static-site/ http://www.blogtrepreneur.com/2007/08/29/building-a-static-site-using-wordpress/ The second link is the first part in a series that pretty much walks you through and gives pointers and tips. You can find part 2, etc. beneath the article. I hope that this helps.
This question was actually answered in the very first reply. If there's something *specific* you need help setting up, then just ask, but otherwise creating a static site is a case of installing WordPress and not making any blog posts
Although TheUrbanTwist posted some pretty useful links (thanks), after reading them thoroughly, they weren't quite what I was looking for. This, on the other hand, is exactly what I was looking for: Wordpress as a CMS.
why wouldnt you use wordpress posts are part of a blogging platform with the site? google will love you...
I think I understand what you want mcfox. You'll need to 1. Create a blank page called "Home" and a blank page called "Blog" 2. Go to Settings--->Reading in the dashboard panel and select the "A Static Page" as your front page display 3. In the drop down menus, select "Home" for front page, and "Blog" for posts page. 4. Edit and fill in the home page with whatever content you want visitors to see on the front page 5. Hide the "Blog" page from the menu display if you're not going to post any blog posts or news. Hope that helped. Regards
