How will one outbound link on many pages of my site affect PageRank?

    I am using a HTML/Java comment box that has an outgoing link next to it, and this link will appear on every page I put the comment box.

    How will this affect my Pagerank?

    Is there any way to make this code NOdofollow?

    <!-- begin htmlcommentbox.com -->
     <div id="HCB_comment_box"><a href="http://www.htmlcommentbox.com">HTML Comment Box</a> is loading comments...</div>
     <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" id="hcb"> /*<!--*/ (function(){s=document.createElement("script");s.setAttribute("type","text/javascript");s.setAttribute("src", "http://www.htmlcommentbox.com/jread?page="+escape(''+window.location)+"&opts=406&num=25");if (typeof s!="undefined") document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(s);})(); /*-->*/ </script>
    <!-- end htmlcommentbox.com -->
    Code (markup):
    Any help much appreciated, thanks.

    Thanks!! But it doesn't seem to work.. I'm using the "no-follow" plugin and when I preview the page with the code, the link is still coming up as do-follow

    There are actually two links there, one which says "html comments" are loading etc, and then after that another which simply says "html commentbox" and that is the one that stays on the page

    ** yes just tested it, your code is working great for the first link which appears as the comments are loading, but it's the second link (which stays there after they load) that is the one I want to make no follow. I've tried inserting your code around that area but all it does it stops the comment box from working at all!

    The only time to use nofollow is if you are worried about linking to a site that has a bad rep with the search engines. It doesn't conserve Pagerank, instead it just evaporates and that way everyone loses out.

    Agreed with simpseo, nofollow does not preserve pagerank. Google officially announced that a couple years ago.

    Google is based on the democratic nature of the Internet - if the tool is useful to you, it's useful to others, so why not just give credit where credit is due?

    Good points there, I'll keep the link because it is a great script and deserves the credit

    SEOwm,

    Watched both videos you linked to. Video #1 is talking about sculpting using your page structure. It has absolutely nothing to do with nofollows. He even says that's a completely different issue in the video. Video #2 is completely irrelevant to the question at hand. It's talking about whether nofollows pass any juice to the page being linked to - and has nothing to do with whether it affects the pagerank of the site that is doing the linking.

    Here is a post that is relevant to the question - http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/pagerank-sculpting/

    It's long, so here's the good part:

    "Originally, the five links without nofollow would have flowed two points of PageRank each (in essence, the nofollowed links didn’t count toward the denominator when dividing PageRank by the outdegree of the page). More than a year ago, Google changed how the PageRank flows so that the five links without nofollow would flow one point of PageRank each."

    This is really good advice and people reading this thread should always treat links of this nature (trustworthy) in this way. Passing some link love to people that are actually helping you out (whether they know it or not) is a good way to create a nice relationship and can go a long way to helping you out in the future, depending on the situation of course.

    For example, the person you link to will suddenly notice that they have a new 'natural' backlink to their site, and if they are the type to check out whether or not the link is nofollowed, they will then see that it is in fact passing link juice. Then they will sit there getting all excited over it (especially if the link is from a high PR page and their site isn't all that popular yet) and continue to help people out in the future. This one of the many things that make the online world go around.

    I for one don't really give a crap about pagerank, but I understand how it works, and there are people that actually do care about it, so passing that link juice to someone that may care about it can go a long way. They most likely will never forget that you gave them a link of this nature (unless of course getting thousands of these backlinks to their site happens regularly because they created such a great resource a long time ago). And in some situations, depending on the nature of their website, they may even give you a link back.
