This might seem obvious but I want to here it from you members. Does linking to the homepage of a website or the main domain affect the overall page rank of the sub pages?

The reason I ask is because often when other webiste link to a website they link to the home page when actually the contents they're referring to is on the pages within the within the website and not on the main page.

Is it the same that more backlinks to the home page will affect other pages?

Check out the wiki on Page Rank - If interior pages gain page rank from being linked to, and they include a link to the homepage, the homepage gains page rank. When the home page links TO the interior pages, PR of the homepage is passed to the interior home pages. Links are like water pipes, PR is the water, you have a limited amount. Make sense?

    Hi,

Having a higher PR for your homepage would be helpful for inner page PR since it would definitely have some relations or links between your homepage and inner pages. Of course, building direct deep links to the inner pages would be more helpful for PR purpose.

    all the best,

Internal linking must be strong and should try to link inner pages using anchor texts.

That is not the answer. I am full aware of it. Just checking the effects of linking to the home page on the sub pages since in most cases when people recommend a site they tend to link to the home page when the relevant content is on another page within the website.

Generally the home page receives most links and therefore carries most page rank, by linking to other pages it passes PR authority and helps new pages to get noticed and indexed. Each page can rank in its own right if there are lots of direct back links. If the hyper link uses key words the home page must have those words and can link through to the relevant page using the same key words.

i generally link to inner pages with some to my main domain. As the term hints its PAGE rank not domain rank.
The added benefit you can get is a "double listing" in google where you have your page or domain indented underneath your first SERP - this really helps and people are more likely to click if you have double listing.

It will also help if you link pages within your website with relevant anchor text.
