I was working on a forum that will give specifications for all sorts of hardware.

So I started doing thousands of posts such as this:

Specification for modem model Motorola 2210
Specification for modem model Motorola 2230
    etc.

with the intention of later updating the posts with the specification data

Anyway up to 2 weeks ago I had thousands of pages indexed in google

but over the last week it dropped to less then 20 pages when I do site:mysite.com (out of thousands which I get if I add inurl: to the search)

I researched and I believe all those pages went into supplemental index because of duplicate content (similar titles) and very little text

when I finally update those pages with the specs (ie add unique text to each page) will google take those pages out of the supplemental index? will google even check those pages again? or what other advice can you give

Google will indexed your site but you have to be careful about spamming don't make same title description of two pages because it count as spam by google. google love unique content.

If you are confident your pages content were original then the main domain is being penalized. I have had experienced the same. When root domain got penalized then a whole website, each and every web page under that domain value will be diluted from Google perspective.

The reason of penalization could be any from "being filtered as you are a newbie" and even "your outgoing links are pointing to some bad neighborhood without intention". How old is your website really?
