Thats the only way anime websites can make money. I used to run Anime websites, and if there is one thing I learned pandering to a niche that steals stuff is horrible way to make money. In February of 2008 I was the one who popularized the third-party direct downloads service with ZavTV. Fortunately, it was the first website I've ever run and I was totally incompetent. Because I was getting 30k uniques a day at it's height, yet I was only making like a dollar a day. So unless you're a stat junkie that just likes to look at numbers get bigger and bigger it's the worst investment ever. The only way anyone is ever going to make $10k annually is to do something that will get you indicted.
