If you heard about page rank (PR) than a dofollow link transfers PR, and a nofollow doesn`t.
Or another explanation is that dofollow links say to the google bot that it should follow that link, and nofollow not to do it.
Or DoFollow links transfer Link Juice that is like a vote from you to that link, nofollow doesnt cast that vote.

Dofollow links pass PR juice while nofollow links don't.

Do follow = Share PR juice + back links
No follow = only you can get Back links

To find if a link is no-follow, check the page source (right click on webpage where link is and find your link in the source). If the link in the source code has rel="nofollow" in there the the link will only pass very little credit for Google.

NoFollow is an HTML attribute that is assigned to a hyperlink that instructs the search engine crawler that the targeted page should not be awarded with a SERP boost. If a link doesn’t contain the ‘Nofollow’ attribute then it is automatically deemed to be a ‘Dofollow’ link.

Initially forums and blogs were do-follow, to bring in huge traffic. After reaching a stage getting high PR they tend to cut down the do-follow to no-follow,so that quality is maintained coz usually do-follow forums are bugged up with advertisers right.
    Simple logic!
