Is there any such thing as a bad link?

I have been doing some research and I have found even backlinks from sites that could be classed as bad neighbourhoods do not affect a sites position in the eyes of Google.

We have tried this with an adult video site and the words viagra linked to a domain that has been optimised for a security product and even when the site with the link on it was cached by google the site not only stayed in the Serps but ROSE!

Anyone else got some input who has experience of this.

    Thank you for posting geester1!

I have the exact same question. And if you don't mind me adding something to your question: Are there backlinks that can affect your website's PR negatively?

    Thank you very much!

yes be very careful from which site you get links. i guess you should get links only from regular websites that looks natural if you are plane to promote your sites for the long run.

it might take google some time to find those tricks but in the end it will be found. so the rank on google can drop after few months

    I strongly disagree with paid-surveys.

I do not believe there is such a thing as a bad backlink. An ignored backlink is the worst backlink you'll ever see but that's all.

Think about it. I'd be child's play to sink your competitors if backlinks could bring bad rep. All you'd need to do is pay some blackhat hacker to link from his flagged spam-infested Viagra sites to your competitors and boom, they'd suffer. Luckily, it does not work like that.

There are no such things as bad backlinks. Only ignored ones. And they don't hurt you.

I think reciprocating backlinks are useless they cancel one another out in Googles eyes. So if your time is valuable then I guess you could argue that reciprocating Backlinks are bad. Unless the site is an authority for that specific keyword / keyword phrase.

You are raising an interesting point pikalainaa. However, I still have my doubts.

Let me explain: Sure, if you have high quality links and all of a sudden someone link-spams you then it probably won't be that big of a deal. But, what if you only have low-quality links. Don't you think that SE's might penalize you for that?

A bad link can be considered a link or overall amount of links coming from sites that have a large amount of OB links, have a bunch of Spammy links going to their site, aren't related to your niche or dont neighbor niche. A bad link could also be that same old anchor text you keep using because it's the keyword phrase your targeting, it just doesn't look natural.

All these low quality links from spammy fly-by-night websites don't work anymore. Only established sites can handle more low-quality links but new sites will be knocked off the face of the earth, it's just too obvious.

You must be check properly from which site you are going to get link. It's always better to get link from the same niche site and always avoiad that adult/vigra/gamblig related site

I don't think there really are links that can hurt your site. But links from adult, warez, etc. sites aren't likely to help much.

In my experience there is no such link as a bad link. I haven't tried with adult backlinks though. There is only a weak backlink.

I've heard that getting too many links too fast can be bad - obviously, as pikalainaa said, nothing that your competitors could do to you would ever be bad for you to do - but a lot of things can bring you under Google's suspicion.

I built a large blog and directory by myself from the ground up (without wordpress or anything like that), but it had a lot of spam coming through in the comments. Even then, my site did not get banned. By PR dropped from 4 to 1, but I was still listed on the first page for a lot of great keywords interestingly enough. So it's highly unlikely that your site is going to be punished for a bad link pointing to you. But beware getting too many of these bad links coming in at once, and as your only source of links, because Google has tons of employees watching out for things like this.

    Agree with pikalainaa

The links may not be counted for your site but they won't hurt you either. You can't really control which sites link to you and how they link to you.

Google has kept it in such a way that nobody can guess the exact algorithm. They want to assume you, that if you'll do bad links to your site, it will hurt you. If you'll do this to the competitors site, they will gain popularity.

I personally have my competitor's site outrank me using highly irrelevant links so yes, I think it works but I won't bet on working for the long term.

yes there is bad backlinks. If your website is about shoes and you got a bunch of backlinks from warez and porn websites, it will have a bad affect on your SERP :)
