What's the difference between having 100 back links from a single popular website than having 100 back links on lets say 10 different websites. I guess what I am trying to ask is are all back links equivalent even if there from a single website?
Are you trying to tell me that having 100 backlinks has the same benefit as having 100 backlinks from 50 different websites?
Hey I think it depends on which activity you are doing and how many pages you are promoting. For example, if you take a social bookmarking site, then you can have 100 different links, not for a particular page. If you take article site, then here you can have 100 backlinks for the particular page from your various articles.
This is what is known as IP diversity of links. In general it is better to have more site linking to then to have lots of links from one site.
I'll take backlinks existing on domains ending in .edu, .org, and .gov with high page rank any day over 100 backlinks from one site.
you are much better to have back links from multiple sources than just a single source, eg if a pr6 has 200 links on the front page then the link juice is diluted significantly where as if a pr4 has only 3 links then one of those 3 links will be worth more than on link on the pr6 site
I guess having 100 back links to unrelated sites would be consider as spam rather than few back links linking to related sites.whats your thought?

Getting backlinks from a wide variety of sources is the best way to get backlinks. It looks less natural if one site has thousands of links pointing to one site. I would much rather have links from 50 different sites than 50 links all coming from the same site. I also think that links coming from sites with a high PR value and .edu and .gov domains are more valuable than other backlinks.
When you get back links from 100 website, more chances that you get link from PR 0 or 1 pages. But there are very very few sites whose all the pages have PR 1. So i think get back link from 100 different site is better then 1 site.
Google always like links through different sources. So, if you collect links through different websites/sources you will be more benefited in terms of rankings and PR
you just have to increase quality bak links.. so its decent on it.. both will work but depend which site has do follow and high PR and fresh content...
